I'm actually very interested to hear what others have invested in their fish as it's only since last year I've gone Koi only and started to understand and appreciate the intricacies of quality and blood line.

Sadly the bottom three fish are no longer with me. My Hariwake went Kamikaze and flew into my skimmer, my Wagoi Ochiba developed Dropsy and my baby Showa was struck down by Costia.

I think my brother paid around £5 to £10 per fish from the garden centre back in 2011. So in total I've personally spent £1,135 on Koi but have only 9 surviving. Of these, I have only one 'perfect' fish which is the garden centre Purachina. My Gin Mat has a big ugly scar on her head from when she was in holding during my refurb (no idea how she did it but it has grown with her), my Yama had the terrible jaw injury but is now fully recovered, the Kin Mat is a mutt but adorable, my Showa and Sanke both have what is thought to be Hikkui on their heads and my Showa is rapidly losing all her sumi and becoming a Kohaku, my Ochiba has a negative swim bladder issue so spends most of her time on the window shelf, the Shiro has lost her brilliant white and is quite yellow and recently broke the top section of her doral ray (most likely on the underside of the poly carbs), and my Soragoi was perfect till it also broke its dorsal ray and developed a few hints of Ochiba brown on the tail section. So there you have it! It would appear that it doesn't matter what you spend on your fish or where you buy from, nothing is guaranteed either genetically or accidentally

The key is that I love them all, and despite being 'perfect' the Purachina is the only one that won't hand feed or come up for strokes, proving that beauty isn't everything

Is this just for fish or ponds too?

If fish then probably about £4-5k but that’s because all my koi have come from KWB and I won’t get fish from anyone else.

If ponds then I genuinely don’t know but certainly over £25k and I’ve always built myself. My current one I shouldn’t even have as I decided to give the hobby up and literally on the day all the fish were supposed to go I changed my mind! At 1800gals it’s by far the smallest I have had....

I do not keep a running total, but I would only buy a fish under £500 if it was tosai (such as the Cuttlebrook Showa I bought this autumn).

My aim at this point is to gradually improve the quality of koi in my pond, hampered by not wanting to move anyone on as they are my pets and I feel I have made a lifetime commitment to them. Consequently the fish I am currently considering is £1500 on a very special end of season offer (was £2800). I would generally look to buy maybe one fish a year if that, in that kind of price range. Some years I buy no fish.

I currently have a very old orange ogon who is not doing well health wise and may soon need to be euthanased, so it is basically her place in the pond that might soon be up for grabs by a potential new purchase.

Have bought a lot of koi in my 30yrs of keeping them though a lot have died with me not knowing how to look after them in the early years.

Most I have paid is £70 for a tosai but I was tempted by one on the internet a gin rin tancho which was over £100 so backed down but regret it now.
Dont think I would spend over £100 on one but who knows.

Just fish... but the pond costs would be a great thread to run separately, though we'd need specs and pics to go with prices Would be very useful for anyone thinking of a first build or refurb.

I sometimes wonder about the fish I`d buy if I came into loads of money , but one of the nice things about the hobby is that you don't have to spend a fortune , in order to enjoy your fish .

My favourite fish is Shaggy the Chag , who cost me £25 on ebay . Ive watched him grow from 6" to over 2 feet , and I reckon that's given me more pleasure than I could ever get from spending thousands on a top class fish .

I think the most Ive spent is around £150 on a fish .

I agree. I won't spend again what we did on the three Sansai we bought last year, that's for sure. The little Showa that I lost this year to costia gave me such total joy to watch grow, and she was just a £40 fish from MA. Hubs bought her for my birthday. She was my 'bargain bucket' find! Sadly, with her and her little mate that died in the skimmer incident, came the outbreak of the prazi resistant flukes that took me almost a year to fix. Can't prove for certain they came in with these fish, but pretty certain it was either these or the water lettuce from MA that I'd added a few weeks before. Won't ever know for sure, but won't buy from MA again now after that experience. Taught me some valuable and very costly lessons! Still missing that Showa even now though

one thing i've noticed, the koi world is like the car modification world.... lol

and as they say "built not bought".

i must admit i much prefer to see fish grow and if anything untoward happens to them, then it's cost me so little plus food and maybe some treatment costs.

the 6-8 inchers i bought was from a hardcore hobbyist, his pond was so nice and the size of his fish were huge the vast majority of them were 20 year olds, except for a few he'd added over the years "Pick of the litter" so to speak from his spawnings, he tells me they were all JAP imports, so i suppose those are English bred from japanese parents.

i was gutted when one of them died during thunderstorms and it was a fiver! lol

Isn’t it a bit like the books a business has, one set for you and a set for the Tax Man, except with koi the Tax Man is the wife

    nope
I don’t have a wife, or even a husband for that matter. I have a Simon, and our relationship flourishes on total honesty, thank goodness.

I have probably only spent circa £2,000.00, most have been 2 for £50.00 or £75.00 offers.from local.koi place, but I have brought 4 at probably £200.00 each.

I am looking forward.to getting some more now the commons are gone and the new pond nearing completion... roll on spring time !!
