    Flying Gin Matsuba

OMG disaster struck at 01.15 hrs this morning (see attached Clip)
My new Gin Matsuba tried to commit Hari-Kari.
My wife let the dogs out at 05.45 this morning and they both went straight to the fish lying motionless on the grass behind my heat pump.
Luckily the dogs didn't pick it up, but they did alert my wife to the fish.
I came straight out and spent the next 45-60 mins trying to revive it. I thought it was definitely a gonna, but sure enough after 30 mins I noticed small gill movements then slowly but surely it improved and with support came back to life.
I'm glad to report it is now cruising round the pond like nothing happened and seems fine.
So out of the water and lying on the grass for about 4.5 hrs??? probably lucky it was chucking it down?

    Wow!

Unbelievable! Great that the koi is ok, wonder if it was the rain that kept it going and the cold temperatures? Flying Gin Matsuba

This is why I have jump guards lol.

I had a chagoi that used to do the same thing and bounce off the jump guards straight back into the pond. No idea why he’d do it, moved him on eventually as he clearly didn’t want to be in my pond anymore lol

I think it must of helped it hadn't dried out due to heavy rain and it was a cool evening.

Is it the case it could try this again then??

I only put it in on Saturday, I did think though if any of the fish were to jump out it would be this one..... it seems to be extremely lively and is up to now has spent the last day flying round the pond bossing the other fish.

It could do but it may have learnt its lesson, I think its quite common for fish to jump when they go in to a new pond. As far as I'm aware it's normally stress related, be it a new environment, a change in parameters or an on set of parasites.

I think my Chagoi was just a bit mental, but he also used to fly around the pond a lot, and would then go to the corners and try and jump out in each corner. During that time the parameters and temps were stable and they were parasite free

Checked the water this morning and all seemed fine. Although I do have slightly naturally high phosphate levels. My water temp is a couple of degrees higher than the tank it was in at the dealers, but all seemed fine, I floated the bag for a good 45-60 mins before introducing the two fish. I haven't checked for parasites but the fish came from a reputable dealer so I wouldn't have thought that would be an issue ?
I think it may just be its a couple of bricks short of a full load?

OMG that is shocking to actually see on the video clip I'm so relieved you managed to revive it and well done for not giving up. Incredible how it survived so long, but yet again, these magnificent creatures remind us not to underestimate them! Bless your dogs for not doing any damage to it.

I've watched the clip a few times (and shown to hubs who was equally gob smacked), and I'm thinking that even jump guards may not have prevented this given just how high that fish went.

I know that netting a pond is the last thing any of us ever want to do, but please do give this some serious consideration. Netting has many benefits besides protection from jumping, including heron attacks (trust me they will dive bomb into your pond - do not believe the fable that they are only wading birds!), seagulls, leaf drop, cats and birds washing. With some careful planning, nets don't have to be overly expensive or look that horrific. Here is a link to my solution to offer a bit of food for thought: Pond Netting Solution.

If we are out in the garden enjoying the pond, the nets are removed so as not to spoil our view. I'm lucky that none of my fish are jumpers (though my Yama engages launch function when being netted sometimes), but some koi just seem a bit prone to this sort of behaviour, so there is a good chance it may do it again. Another benefit of my net solution is that you could use it as a frame for poly carbs to lay over if you go that route for winter.

BTW - what CCTV set up do you have that captured that? I'm looking to install one on my home so would be interested in your solution and how you get on with it

Yes it could well be lol. Phosphate isn't really an issue, just high levels of it can encourage the dreaded blanket week to start growing. I can't remember the last time I checked phosphate if I'm honest.

Going up in temp isn't as much of an issue as coming down, they can handle going up a lot better.

It could just be because its a new pond for it, new surroundings.

Thanks for the info and recommendations, I think I will defo need to look at some sort of net.
I have some new polycarbs on order.

I have Google's Nest Camera system, The kit is bit expensive and there's an annual subscription if you want to be able to look back 30 days, but it is such a simple wifi based system, just plug and play.
You can also now add as many cameras as you need on one subscription. Excellent quality though

It’s certainly a lucky fish- picked the right weather conditions to explore the garden in, and also lucky not to be dog food. I wouldn’t trust my dog and 3 cats not to scoff an unfortunate fish!

I would consider jump guards if I were you. Once you have them you literally dont have to worry about this kind of thing again. I’ve had the odd one jump into the guards that I’m aware, usually during spawning behaviour, but I’m sure there must be more occasions I’m not aware of over the years where the guards have saved the day. If you visit dealers with expensive koi, you will see they either have guards up or a big gap between the water level and top of the wall. That tells you something about koi behaviour, and protecting your investment

Perfectly normal with the jumping in new water. Net or cover is a must. I can beat your few hrs lol, I once had a common on the side for over 7 hrs. If I hadn’t seen it I wouldn’t have believed it, he went on to live till 28!

In a previous pond I had a favourite mirror carp jump out.
I wandered past the pond and a leaf covered muddy stone that had never been there before caught my eye.
I peered at this oval shaped "flat-ish stone " and realised it was my 12 inch mirror carp covered in dried mud, bits of leaves etc. Still as a dead fish but it twitched when I lifted it.
I put it in the closest thing to hand which was a rain water butt as I thought if I put it in the pond it would sink and die . Gently all the gunk just slowly melted off it.
It lived for many more years till a bloody mink had it as a snack and left me its head.
If the fall doesn't kill them and the gills stay moist they'll be fine for hrs.
The mucous just dries and protects them.
We weren't as lucky with a nice 2 yr old gin rin Asagi called Corona recently.

that is good news it recovered, taking in what you say that it was bossing the other fish around and how high out the water it was, it most likely could be that the other fish rounded him up and made sure he was chucked out, lol

That was a decent jump! I’m not convinced it would not have cleared a guard Flying Gin Matsuba glad the fish was ok and it was fortunate it went on the grass and not the patio.

Seriously impressive wasn't it! Yes, that was my worry too about the jump guards, hence my suggestion to net instead. I also like being able to sit on the edge of my pond, and designed the upper patio pond walls to be exactly the right height for me to do just that, so putting jump guards on would not work for me. Of course, Mr Heron would be very happy if I used guards instead of nets or polys...his attempt to dive bomb the pond was well and truly foiled again recently ...

OMG It's happened again 05.39am this morning, this time my Hi Utsuri.????

    https://youtu.be/BO7rvSWvN1w

Rescued, resuscitated and back swimming again.....hopefully all fine, although there was some minor blood loss from just below one gill cover.

Both the Matsuba and the Utsuri are from the same dealer, hopefully just coincidence?
I am definitely getting a net over this weekend while I build and install my winter covers. I would hate to lose a fish like this

I have four other smaller fish that seem quite happy and non have tried to top themselves? Yet???

I have been feeding 3-4 times a day and checking my water parameters every 2-3 days and up to now all seemed ok however last night I noted slightly raised ammonia.
I have read this is to expected in a new pond?

    Ammonia 0.25 ppm
    Nitrite 0.0 ppm
    pH 7.6 ppm

I have noticed some minor flashing, but this seems to be mainly after feeding for an hour or so and not constant.

Should I be looking to carry out a water change or should I up the rate of my trickle in/out and let it hopefully sort this out over a few days ?

Update on the Mastuba: It seems absolutely fine now and is back to its normal pond boss activity, see below.
