    Help\contacts required - East midlands

    Hi,

My Mother in law passed away, we have been keeping her husbands koi pond going and now are in the position that the house will need to be sold, but the pond will probably not be of use to a new buyer. There are numerous fish and large koi in here then we need to have a new owner for. Can anyone suggest someone to speak to in derby\nottingham area?

    TIA
    Dave

If you advertise them free to a good home on a site like Preloved you might get someone interested. Finding someone local enough is always the issue, but sites like that people search by postcode.

Thanks Feline - always aware of unscrupulous people on there - would prefer someone i can investigate to make sure they go to a good home. Plus do not want and pick and choose - all or nothing

The concept of all need to go together is understandable, the jobs done in one hit. The downside of that is that its totally unrealistic apart from maybe a rare occasion.

If someone is willing to take a complete pond full of fish its likely they don't know what they're doing.
Someone who is more likely to look after them, would only want to take 1 or a few.

Better pictures and sizes maybe you get some takers, are they free or at a cost?

Sorry to hear of your loss.

It isn't impossible that whomever buys the house may want to take on the pond. I did when I bought my home! You just never know so it may be good to get the house on the market and gauge the reaction of viewers before making a final decision as to what to do with the pond. In the meantime, put a plan in place to decommission it should it become obvious that the pond is a sticking point.

On a Koi forum like this, you ideally need to take some good photos of the koi and offer a description of size and price (if you wish to sell them) to garner interest.

If you are wanting a whole pond clearance, try searching Pets4Homes. There you will get both adverts for people selling or giving away fish, as well as places that rehome whole ponds. Here are the results from a search I did for Derby at a 30 mile radius: https://www.pets4homes.co.uk/search/?type_id=4&breed_id=249&location=derbry&distance=3 0. You ideally need a count of all occupants with rough idea of sizes to share with those offering whole pond rehomes (I'm speaking from experience here!). When I went koi only, I contacted a number of these places and went to see one local to me. In the end though I rehomed all my goldfish, orfe and shubunkin at a managed University lake where my brother worked, so it may be worth thinking along those lines also. Contact places in your vicinity that have such ponds or lakes and see if they would like some additional stock.

Just in case you were not aware (as many folk aren't ), please be advised that it is illegal to release pond or aquarium fish into rivers or lakes without the permission of the owner. Not only are such fish likely to die quite quickly, but you risk a serious disruption of the environment into which they are released. This is a good guide about it: Your Legal Duty of Care for Keeping Fish under The Animal Welfare Act

It's hard enough dealing with the loss of a family member, and the resulting probate and property sale, so I can quite imagine how a pond full of fish is creating an extra burden for you. I hope something here is helpful to you

I rehomed my golden tench and goldfish a few years ago to a guy from one of those sites who had just built a large lake in his garden. He showed me a photo of it, looked great and I think they were very fortunate to be going there tbh. He came and collected the whole lot, helped catch them too. So there are people out there, but you probably won’t find them on a koi forum tbh.

Agreed the MIL and FIL would be over the moon they can go to someone who will get as much enjoyment out of them as they did

It took a long time to get the water to be clear and going down to feed them was one of the things that kept the MIL going after the FIL passed

    Hi Wain
The three inter linked ponds hold 100000 gallons and the 2 x 35 metre long filter rivers feeding the 2 outer ponds hold aprox 6000 each.
My neighbour wants them up and running in memory of his Father that built these ponds in the late 80's glad i aint paying his water bill he is on a meter and its cost £50 per week just to hire the stand pipe from South Staffs water

I am glad someone else stepped in as I was tempted to start up my new pond before the spring ( which isn’t ideal)to help out In an emergency.
