    Inspiration needed

    Hi

So last year the filter pit was dug bricked up and all the toys installed, its fully below ground well the top is ground level. I intended to put a shed over it or a decking lift up lid. However the shed would be ugly and the lid real heavy to lift.

So the question is what else could I build over/around to keep pump noise down and rain and debris out, something timber and attractive but I am not sure what?

Any pictures of your creations would help

    Cheers

    Andy

I've got a decking roof on my filter house that I lift with the help of two gas struts. If that solution interests you let me know and I'll share some pics and links to what I've used when I'm at my PC later Inspiration needed

Build a wooden decking cover in sections that fit snugly when down but can be easily lifted when you want to access part or all of the filter pit - works for me!

What about a cold frame type of build on the top

would be low in height , garden furniture ie not look out of place, and be of little weight if polycarb lid

    not got any pics, sorry

Sorry for the delay in getting back on this. My filter house is integral to the pond walls but is not so tall that I can stand fully upright in it, so the roof has to be lifted to properly access all the equipment. The roof is some 2m x 1.5m at its extremes and weighs a good 75kg.

I have two Variable Force Gas Struts from Metrol T/A Struts Direct that are installed either side of the roof. These send the roof upwards with minimal effort on my part and lock it safely in place whilst I'm inside the filter house. When it comes to pulling the roof back down, I have tied a couple of Exercise Handles to the front edge of the roof with cord, which makes it really easy to pull down as I can't actually reach high enough to grab the edge as shown below. Sorry that this pic doesn't show much detail. It's blowing a gale and peeing down at the mo, but if you want some better photos of how I've attached the struts and handles let me know and I'll take some when the weather is a bit better!

The struts can be adjusted so that just the right amount of force is required to close them, by slowly letting out the gas once they are installed. The total cost of the struts in 2017 was £90.94 delivered. If you send your requirement to Metrol they will work out a 2D plan for you and advise exactly what type of strut(s) you need and how best to fix them. I've been delighted with this solution as it makes daily access to my filter house easy and safe. The only problem I've had was the wall brackets rusting but I have recently discovered that this is due to 'galvanic corrosion' where I have used stainless steel screws with the mild steel brackets as shown below. Fascinating stuff which I had no idea about until this happened, but once the process starts it can be quite rapid! This is the second time I've had this issue. The first time Metrol very kindly sent me replacement parts free of charge, but this time around, now we've identified what the issue is I'm working with them to obtain some stainless steel brackets which will eliminate the problem completely. I highly recommend Metrol and wouldn't hesitate to buy from them again.

Very nice setup, thanks for the info about gas struts I am thinking this could work for me but fully in timber. I will put pencil to paper and see what I can come up with.
