    Lucky Escape

At 7.30 this morning, I opened the kitchen blind, as normal, to look at the pond and was horrified to see one of my koi ( 35cm Ogon ) motionless on the paving in front of the pond window.

I rushed out and grabbed my viewing bowl and recovered the koi and floated it in the pond.
There was no sign of life at all, no movement of any kind from the gills, eyes no fin movement, and I thought that the fish must have been there for sometime.
The fish could not maintain its position at all, so I supported the fish and while keeping it upright started to move the fish backwards and forwards in the bowl. After doing this for a couple of minutes there was no response, and started to think I had found it to late.

For some reason I carried on with the back and forth motion, but was really thinking about how I was going to dispose of it, and telling my other half, when to my amazement, the fish gave out what I can only describe as a sort of cough. I carried on moving the fish, and started to notice very small gill movement, 5 minutes later and the gill movement was stronger, but if I let go of it, it would just go on its side. After continued support , I then noticed eye movement then fin movement.
After a further 20 minutes the fish could then maintain body position, and although very lethargic was back in the land of the living.

Now transferred to a hospital tank, and upon inspection seems relatively unscathed, small amount of tail fin damage and a small split in the first ray of the dorsal fin, and I think he may of landed on his head when launching himself over the window.

I have no idea how long this fish had been out of the water, but I am quite pleased that I didn't give up on what I was sure was I lost cause.

Have checked up on it all day, and am pleased to say it is swimming around ok, and even taken a little food.

Now to get the jump guards installed, especially over the infinity window.

Wow. That's amazing. Well done for persevering and thank you for sharing such an inspirational story Lucky Escape

Its funny, but sometimes you just know that you can't give up. I had this with an orfe I sedated once that wouldn't come round. I've sedated a lot of fish over the years and never had one fail to revive within a few mins at the most. But this chap was different. I was still at the microscope whilst hubs was performing the reviving watch when he called out to me that we'd lost him. I just refused to believe it so removed the fish from the aerated recovery bowl and moved him back and forth in front of the pond return. It was freezing as this was November temps. I remember I couldn't feel my hands, then my arms, but I just knew I couldn't let this fish go. It finally worked but took a good 8 mins after which it came fully concious quite rapidly and swam off to join its buddies. Fish really are quite amazing.

This is also a reason why whenever I have lost a fish that died naturally or from euthanasia, I gently wrap them and place them in my freezer to be absolutely certain they are gone. Goodness knows what I'll do though when I loose one of my big koi as that won't be fitting in my freezer drawer and I don't want to think of ways to make it! Lucky Escape

It sounds like when my Showa jumped out. My OH heard the splat so we know she was only out for a few seconds. But she was unconscious for some minutes, must have banged her head. I used my floating net to keep her in for around an hour until she was able to swim properly again. She didn’t have a mark on her fortunately.

Unless you have sides a few inches above water level it’s pretty much inevitable that you will get a fish jump out sooner or later. Jump guards are a really great idea if you want the peace of mind that it can’t happen again.

    Lucky Escape

I didn’t have a ‘jumper’ but a similar situation when watching a Koi in my Mum’s pond.

We were just chatting and admiring them when one of them just laid over and floated to the top!!!

I grabbed a net, pulled the Koi towards me and lifted her out the net to see what was going on.

    Nothing...

Mouth was clamped, gills clamped, fins clamped. Motionless.

I put my finger in her mouth to open it and also did the same for one gill and started moving her back and forth in the water.

Did this for nearly 15mins and then I felt a twitch. Carried on doing this for another 10mins and she righted herself.

Kept going and eventually she swam off and that was that.

She’s now in my pond, moved them all over a while back, and that Koi has now been with me for over two years, not a single episode like before.

I can only put it down to maybe a seizure of some sort.

Never happened since. So bizarre but so lucky I was at my Mum’s at that exact time on that exact day.

Resilient fellas & lasses these Koi sometimes.

There is a YouTube channel called the fish doctor by an Australian vet called Dr Richmond Loh. He had to resuscitate a fish once and said that placing the end of an airline with gentle air bubbling into the fish mouth would provide oxygen but the gentle pumping action would also stimulate the heart kind of like CPR. I had to do this once to a fish that stopped breathing after sedation and it worked.

    Update,
So after 48 hour's in isolation ( yes, even fish have to ) there appears to be no long term damage from his bungee attempt without a chord, so I have returned him back to the main pond.

Seems quite glad to be back with his mates, and was immediately up with the rest of them looking for food. Will monitor his progress, and will post back with any further developments.

Hahaha. That does actually happen... but not quite in "shall we have this for dinner tonight, honey" terms. Hubs has sometimes bought a fish into the kitchen when he's been going through the freezer drawers, to check with me which one it is as they are carefully wrapped!! I like to give my scalies a proper send off; they each get cremated on our chimnea so I get to say a few words and wish them a proper goodbye. We don't light up the chimnea all that often, hence a fish that has shuffled off the mortal coil may spend a while in the deep freeze so he forgets My baby Showa is 'on ice' as I type

I know this may seem odd to some, but that's just how I like to do it. Hey - it's not as bad as all that. I've had a dead rat in the freezer before!

Hmmm. It'll take some careful planning. Need space in garage for large chest freezer which would require the disposal of hubs motorbikes. But suggesting such disposal is likely to result in wife in freezer. Very tricky chicken 'n egg dilemma Lucky Escape
