Potassium permanganate aging of plastic media

I would like to hurry along some K1 micro.
Its going into a semi mature( like me ! Age not mentality) 24 inch bead that was underfilled at install by 50L .
Don't ask how I've worked this out but you can actually dismantle and re assemble an EA bead bit by bit internally. Think like a urologistPotassium permanganate aging of plastic media.
So what's the pp formula or do we just dip it to the fabled Tufnel "11"?
    Thanks
    Jim

Since your aim is just to coat it all in an inert later of manganese oxide- dose is not important. Just make up some nice purple solution in hot water and soak it overnight, then stick some ST in there to neutralise it to a brown colour the next day before you rinse. Don’t use HP to neutralise it as you don’t want to bleach the stuff off again

Some people don’t neutralise and just rinse- but I wouldn’t personally want to stick active PP down a drain. Wouldn’t be worse than drain cleaner though I suppose.

Obviously wear goggles and gloves when you’re using it and don’t breath in the powder whatever you do.

I bought a 2nd hand easy pod cleaned it all out, with hose pipe etc, then refilled it with the K1 it came with and then filled it with water and then added vircon to sterilise/disinfect it all, 90% of the K1 looks clean now, but the k1 seems to be rising above the water level and not sinking, any idea what's causing that, I'm not sure that the air pump I'm using is powerful enough either its an Oase pump

If your K1 is too buoyant then that’s usually because it hasn’t got enough biofilm on yet to sink.
PP’ing it when new is one way to help it sink faster.

You’re only using the air pump for cleaning aren’t you? (Just checking)

You can fashion a circular disc out of something to hold the K1 down in the chamber if you’re having problems- some people find it helps them work better for filtering fines. A disc of plastic or even of jap mat can work for this.

Cheers Feline. I'll fashion something to suit,

The K1 think its mirco K1, came with the pod so that's 2nd hand as well, maybe the vircon has caused it to float?
