Patternwise the left, body shape wise the right. Personal choice though I think!

The pattern on the first one would be my preference.

The stability of the sumi on the first one would worry me. My Showa's sumi went like this then disappeared! The 2nd one looks to have better defined sumi - at the mo. No guarantee it'll stay that way I know! Plus it's got really nicely balanced Motogoro. That's my thing so it'd be No.2 for me Which one would you choose

Here you go... the case of the disappearing sumi! How a Showa becomes a Kohaku Which one would you choose Just as well she's still got the lovely kuchibeni. Makes up for the disappointment of losing her pattern. Shame about the Hikkui on her head but it's stabilized currently so hopefully won't progress. Lovely friendly fish that enjoys a chin rub so still adore her despite her chameleon tendency This is a Yamamatsu bought as a Sansai.

    Which one would you choose

The pattern on 1 looks good now but I think the Hi would be out of balance when a bigger fish. I think number 2 would be my choice

I don’t mind Kage sumi but there is no developed sumi at all on 1

That’s some transformation there Wendy. Sumi on Hi is always risky how I understand it. Surprised it held its patten to Sansai and then lost it in a year.

Kuchibeni is cute Which one would you choose

Do you know if male or female?

It is frustrating as the Sumi was really appealing originally. It zig zagged all the way down the body from the head (sadly I've no photos that show just how nice it looked initially as I had a blip with my phone and lost some pics). I even forked out for Sansai in the hope the colours may be more stable at that age. Just shows you can never predict what a koi will do. I'm honestly hoping she'll loose all the black now as that'll justify me buying another Showa so I'll have all three Gosanke as my Sanke is holding good Which one would you choose

Sadly my other Showa (the baby you can see in my Avatar) had to be euthanised this year from Costia and I still miss her as she was coming along beautifully. I like a Showa that's heavy on the sumi - plus she had large symmetrical Motogoro Which one would you choose It's a tough old hobby sometimes.

Sorry ... I've put a right old dampner on this happy thread. Back to the topic... yay new fish! Which one would you choose

You need a good understanding of the parent blood lines to even try to predict how things will develop with Showa and Sanke.
With the right genetics the Kage sumi in no 1 would have better potential than the strong sumi on no 2 which looks too ‘finished’ in a fish of that age. But without a working knowledge of those particular breeders and brood stock it’s pretty much a total gamble.

Thats assuming the fish are going into the right water, with the right food and temperature/food regime too.
