I would be buying new for piece of mind.
£300.00 you have already stated you would pay. If need be. For new. That could break in transit. If you bought new. And anything goes wrong. Tony would just replace it. No brainer in my eyes.

Please remember that even if Shirley's or Tony refuse to honor the usual 12 month warranty on this drum (which hasn't yet been established), you still have rights under the 2015 Consumer Rights Act.
In summary:
30 days to reject a product as faulty and get a full refund.
60 days in which you must allow the retailer the opportunity to repair or replace a faulty product, but may also be offered a refund.
After 60 days, the onus now falls to you to prove the fault was there from the outset in order to obtain replacement, repair or refund.
As I've mentioned previously, buy the item on credit card (or pay a deposit of min £100), to obtain Section 75 protection which creates a 3rd party agreement between you, the retailer, and the card company which makes them jointly and severally liable for the performance of the product.
This is a well written article that explains all this in more detail:
https://www.which.co.uk/consumer-rig...faulty-product
Basically, you are not 'out in the cold' if you buy this 'new' drum, you have plenty of backup in the event that it turns up and doesn't work, is damaged in transit (though you've said you'll collect), or develops a fault in the first 6 months. Even after 6 months, you have protection, it can just be a bit more time consuming to get the result you want. Incidentally, you also have up to SIX YEARS in which to bring about a claim against the retailer for a faulty product that they refuse to put right!
Personally, I believe you're not yet at the stage where you can make a decision until you've spoken to Shirley's and Draco, so hang in there. If nothing else, it's a good learning experience on consumer rights!

At the end of the day you pay your money you make your choice, think the general consensus indicates you have a free run at it.

Very interesting! That appears to be the newer version which raises the question of why the terminal box is white/grey and not the black one that Tony installed on mine when be changed the motor
This is (was - as it's now Spongebob's!) the inside of my black box:

No that's the new version that Tony put on when he changed my motor as per the photos above of my original vs new motor. Was gonna suggest you asked them to photograph the inside of the box Of course that's not to say things haven't changed again since this!
Is there anyone at Shirley's today that can confirm what warranty they'll be offering on this drum?

It’s not even a £300 saving if you shop around, it’s £155.

have you asked them if it comes with a 12 month warranty like it would if you bought from another retailer?

If it is the later motor you should have a board like this along with the connector block inside the grey box.

Haha Touche
As I said many posts back - shop around all the Draco resellers for best price on new (starting with most local for on site support if necessary), negotiate a better deal with Shirley's, asses your risk threshold, and quantify the warranty with both the retailer and the manufacturer on this new older model. Basic due process that once completed makes the decision pretty easy! It's what I do with anything I buy of value or importance.
Over the years I've had to use both Consumer law and Section 75 to rectify problems with new goods and services (the most stressful being the failure to deliver my wedding video by a professional film maker ). Its all a right faff and the older I get the less inclined I am to take on such battles . Life feels too damn short! But it's good to know your rights and I've never lost a claim.
Poor Paul - he's well under the spot light now. It's like WWTBAM - he's already gone 50/50 by asking the audience. He's only got phone a friend left

I'm really intrigued by this. Sorry if this sounds stupid, but when you say 'grey box' do you mean the box on the side of the drum (which are nowadays black, but still the old version on the drum in question), or the control unit that goes on the wall (which also has a greyish case)? I never opened my control unit so have no idea what it looked like inside, but it obviously would have had a chip board. However, if that is from the electronics box on the side of the drum, then as I speculated, the motors have had another upgrade since mine in October 2018.
In all honesty I never had any issues with either the first or second motor, Tony just choose to upgrade all my components FOC when he refurbed my twisted box because his authorised installers had put the support feet on the wrong way round which jammed it up against the inside of the Nexus. Can't knock Draco for their service

Box on the Draco unit Koiz, not the controller which is on the wall.
I’m on my third motor now, first one lasted under a year, replaced under warranty, water ingress, second on failed a week after we went into lockdown, lasted longer so was an improvement. Also suffered with water ingress into the box on the Draco, had to replace the connector block due again to water ingress, now the back is silicon sealed. Have replaced the float sensor a couple of times due to it not falling when the level drops, have now modified it by gluing 5p halfway along the float switch which so far seems to have solved the issues. It’s just over 3 years old now, fitted July 2017.
Later motor is a Stepper Motor, brushless, hence having the board, not digital has I stated earlier.
Only issue with Draco now it seems is I don’t think Tony wants to deal with the public, or the dealers have complained about him selling to the public, I’ve noticed now on his www that he is directing you to the dealer.

If I wasn’t sure before I would be now, I certainly know where I’d buy it from now without doubt, that settles it in my mind.
Koiz, you will certainly know by the sound of the motor if you have it compared to the older one, completely different it sort of just hums as it turns.
