Visit from Gazkoi (Aurora Koi)
Hi all,
Over the last couple of weeks some of my fish have been a bit off colour. Some flashing and clamping up whilst sitting on the bottom. Two in particular looking a bit worse for wear.
I test my water weekly and there was nothing untoward in the readings.
So after ruling out water issues I scraped the two fish and a couple of the others but found nothing. My scrapes were not great though as I had not sedated the koi and none of them fancied sitting there placidly whilst I menaced them with scraping utensils.
I decided I would like a second opinion and contacted Gazkoi on here for advice. I asked if he could carry out one of his chargeable home visits, bring some koi sedate and show me how to use it. He was very helpful on the phone and happy to oblige with a visit - I am fairly local to him.
He came round this morning and gave my set up some scrutiny. I’m glad to say he thought it was fine. 2000 gallons, BD and skimmer feeding drum - pump - uv - nexus 200 - gravity return.
The first thing he did was test the water and also found no issues - we had a slight difference on our PH readings (Gaz got 7.5 vs my 8.2 - I think my digital reader needs calibration.)
So then we scraped several fish.
Gaz showed me how using the koi sedate made for a much less stressful way of getting decent scrapes. No way would we have been able to access the areas that we gathered samples from without the koi being sedated. He also prepared me for the horror of seeing your favourite fish going belly up in the bowl! (All the fish were fine once returned to the pond)
After rigorous scrutiny neither of us found any signs of parasites.
This lead us to believe it was a bacterial issue.
We had a good discussion and came up with a plan of action - a course of CT. At no point did Gaz try and sell me something I didn’t need. He was very knowledgeable and very willing to help.
After he had gone I did a couple of further scrapes on some more fish but still found nothing.
Gaz, I just wanted to say thanks for your help and guidance today it was very obvious that you were there to help a fellow Koi enthusiast and not just to make money. It was much appreciated.
I think several people on this forum have already said that you are a top bloke and I can confirm that they are correct.
I look forward popping over to Aurora Koi at some point.
Cheers
Ady

Nice one gaz
I know some don’t agree with sedation for scrapes but I do. It causes much less stress to me and the fish. I can calmly take a good scrape from any part of the fish without the risk of injury or having doubt if I did a good enough scrap.
All my koi are young and very active and do not like to be handled.
Maybe once they are bigger and I am more experienced I’ll try again without sedation.
Hope you get to the bottom of the issue, do feed back how you get on as I’m in a similar situation at the moment. Although mine are stilling on the bottom but not clamped. Water fine, I am in the process of a treatment so could be that.
Gaz has always been on hand to other advise, and just another view on what could be the cause. Must visit again soon Gaz

Thanks Mike very much appreciated.
Like many things in Koi, crowds can be divided, however in my experience as you say light sedation alongside keeper vigilance makes the experience far less stressful and more successful.
I have seen many koi injured and keepers fraught when trying to obtain a scrape from their pride and joy which can be avoided. Even the most friendly Koi can become stressed and difficult to handle at times. When this happens it can also lead to the job being half done which again defeats the purpose entirely.
During my keeping and retailing time I have tried a few techniques, however this ones is the most painless.
I use Kusuri products which I have faith in and to-date have not had a problem with sedation.
cheers

I will probably sound stupid here but I never sedated for a scrape because in my head I thought the sedation would have the same effect on the parasite and wouldn't show up under the microscope.

That’s an interesting point, however one of the advertised uses for the product is mucus scrapes.
I have sedated and found parasites which were moving as Shell on here will vouch. I will run some checks when I find parasites here without sedation and then sedate the same fish and rescrape when appropriate
