it's gorgeous today, clear sunny and 23C outside
...but just looked at the weather forecast....
...it seems the temps are about to drop off a cliff by the end of the week,
down to 11C in the day and 6C over night!
time to get the covers out.....

So I’ve stepped up the insulation over the weekend and unfortunately ran out of foil tape so need some more to get it finished. Have pre/cutall of the insulation in readiness for the big chill.

I’ve got to do that to mine as the foil tapes have got punctured over the summer and there’s condensation in there - thing is I’ve got the 35mm 7 wall ones so it’s going to be hard work to clear. I brought them indoors at the weekend and planning to remove the foils, keep upright (luckily I have nice high ceilings) and then blast a hairdryer from the top down in the hope it will force the droplets out and at the same time dry them out to be re-taped.
Does anyone know of a better way to get rid of the condensation?Last edited by DiabloDave; 21-09-2020 at 11:06 PM.

Cheers dave so am using polystyrene sheets 50mm thick and foil bubble wrap for pipes . Is it a bit drastic to pink grip the sheets to a multibay (money or wife anit gunna let is have a drum any time soon so not bothered about selling mb) . Hoping using the 50mm ill be able to channel out for lips and outlets and make a tidy job for once

can you use foil tape to hold the insulation on or is the multi bay in the open air?
any insulation is better than nothing,
but the foil bubble wrap is mainly only good for radiated heat insulation, it has very little convected heat insulation.
pipework really needs close cell foam armaflex type.
also the polystyrene sheet is half the insulation of celotex so 50mm polystyrene is the same as 25mm celotex.
fair enough if you can get it cheaply,
but celotex is also stronger and easier to cut/snap work, without making a snow storm...

Just worked it out only need 2 boards of celotex 50quid off ebay delivered but I'll have a look around see if any where close has it cheaper . I'll pay 50 like tbf . And for what pipe I have on show I might even if I cut every perfect enough celotex to box pipes in !!? . Do people box uv and pumps in water and air ?? Worrying about over heating??

if it's easy enough to fit,
celotex has better thermal qualities than armaflex,
but it needs to be a snug fit with no gaps or the heat just rises and escapes anyway....
i didn't bother with UV, heater, or pumps, they are all either in the filter house anyway, and are a very small percentage of exposed pipework.
and i wouldn't want to cover the ballast up on the UV.
foil faced PIR board is pretty cheap if you can get a local supplier...
my local builders stock 'quinn board'. same stuff as celotex, kingspan ect....
but i bought a load of 2nd hand 50mm sheets left over from a loft conversion on ebay locally, when i built my log cabin.
i just scored and snapped them roughly to size to fit in my car....
they were in better nick than the new ones i got from a local builders merchant lol!

well thats it im covered, re built the frames today and got carried away, looking at the rest of the weeks wind and rain and low temps today was the only day i wanted to be outside building stuff so before i knew it the pond was covered so ive left it on, ive made it so the middle lifts up on a hinge made of 15mm pushfit pipe that i had laying about so i can leave that part up, considering ive been off work for 3 months it seems like a really short koi keeping year this year
