Beni fading
Been doing some reading about beni and the causes for it to fade, i do have a male kohaku thats looking like its about to lose a tonne but why? I have a female kohaku from the same breeder and bought at the same time as tosai they where both inside for a year and a half the vat is next to a window so are in sunlight all day the male went out 1st then a few months later the female was put in the main pond too, all was fine untill the fish spawned then the beni started to get weaker on the male, so both same breeder, possibility that they are from the same parents, same water, food, light.
Natural light seems to be one of the main reasons for loss of beni but mud ponds are as the name suggests muddy, not a great deal of light gets through so why would it be a good idea to grow on a fish in japan in a mudpond? i dont think its a light issue at all, it seems like certain fish needs to ingest a certain something to keep that pigment , light may make it darker but im not sure on the lack of like being the cause for it to fade and disappear

I don't know how it works with koi, but normal common and mirror carp colours are greatly different in clear and murky water. In clear water they are dark sometimes black on top but in murky lakes they are usually all pale. My mirror went brown in the temp pool with the white base but in the dark background pond it went dark again within hours which could maybe be some form of camouflage maybe?
