    Skimmer flow

Hi all I have a 1800 gallon pond that gets filtered with a multibay and waterfall to a planted area back to the pond works brilliant with clear water and good readings 10 goldfish quite small and 6 koi 3 about a foot long and 3 about 6 inches
All these are growing quite fast so I would like to add diy drum the new one from wrighty and then use the multibay as a moving bed back to the waterfall and so on
I have just added a wide mouth skimmer never had one before just constantly using the net to clear leaves everyday a right pain
I have a bottom drain which will go into the drum and a 10000 litre variable pump will this provide enough flow for the drum and skimmer and what size pipe should I use for the skimmer please
    Thank you in advance
    Chris

I have a similar system 1000 Gal Gravity fed 4”BD & 4” Side Drain into drum then into chamber (Brush/matting/moving K1/anoxic pumped back into pond. Also Skimmer 1.5” Pumped through uv through mini chamber Gravity-Fed back into main chamber then pumped back into pond.

If in your case the skimmer is not the same diameter as the bottom drain you may find the bottom drain takes all the flow. Even with valves to adjust the flow I found I couldn’t balance the flow. I only managed to get a decent flow on both by having a separate pump drawing the skimmer .

    Chris,

You don't say if your filter is gravity fed or pumped. I use gravity on both my bottom drain and in-wall skimmer separately fed into the filter (which just happens to be a drum). The skimmer pipework is 2 inches and works fine but if I was doing it again I would use a 3 inch pipe. I have to clean out my 4 inch bottom drain and 2 inch skimmer pipework every 3-4 months with a Karcher drain cleaner extension thingy but I have a lot of trees and bamboo around. Whatever the pipe size coming out of the bottom of your skimmer will determine the flow through it.

    Kenny
