Orfe question
Abit of a random one why do some meds say not safe to use with orfe and tench? I had orfe years ago and they were fine if I used meds. Is it simply because it can lower the oxygen levels and orfe like a lot of oxygen?

I think it is to do with some fish are more sensitive than others when it comes to treatments. It's odd as Tench are said to be able to survive in a muddy puddle but Orf like more oxygenated water. It's strange that the same things have an adverse effect on fish that like totally different water conditions

It is a strange situation as Tench, Koi and I'm guessing Orfe are all from the Carp family so you would have thought, what effects one effects all? I would have thought that Koi would have been more sensitive than Tench and Orfe being the most sensitive of the 3? Maybe it's something that has happened as part of the breeding process trying to get different varieties of Koi?
Then again KHV only effects Koi doesn't it?

I keep Orfe in a separate pond. Heavily planted and very deep (2 metres). I don't do much - they fend for themselves.
Likewise green tench, gudgeon, a few Rudd and a lot of sticklebacks in a biggish wildlife pond. I just let them get on with it as well.

Orfe are from the European river fish the Ide so they are not carp. I think Oxygen levels will be the answer on medication as when Orfe are not happy they jump like kangaroos. They even decide if the pond they are in is no longer big enough, if not they leave. They also get huge some internet searching pulled up a surprise for me.

I think its to do with their skin, not 100% though.
Sturgeon have the same issue with treatments, and like Orfe they are very oxygen sensitive.
I don`t believe that is an issue for Tench though.
