Koi ailments
I see a lot of posts on the forum about Koi health issues. Obviously I am new to this but it makes me wonder how parasites get into a pond. I am building a brand new pond using all brand new equipment. If I only introduce fish that have been properly quarantined by a reputable supplier, how do parasites enter the system? I understand that birds could do this if they have come from other ponds or waterways. Or introducing plants maybe?
If I can keep my pond bird free, is it possible to still get parasites?
Is it only likely to be aquatic birds that introduce pests or could it also be regular garden birds too?

Parasites come from all types of beasties, frogs, toads, newts, lizards, snakes, slugs, snails, worms,,,,let alone plants, seeds, birds, you just have to be very alert to your fish/koi behaviour?
Quarantine systems are a pre requisite, but many people don’t have one? (Another can of worms)
So understanding your own koi? How they feed, how they swim, do they shoal together? Watch the Loner? Observation is critical & as I have often stated this Hobby, the more you learn it can easily become an Obsession!
Truly this is real, but you must really learn & enjoy the processes from microscopy, to medications, to water chemistry, Hydrostatics, pressure, & flow, dwell time, plumbing & Electrics, the seasons, all change the needs & requirements for you to administer & “alter what happens next”?
Good Luck with your Journey! I hope this helps.
Stay Lucky.

i think it would theoratically be possible to have parasite free koi and keep them that way.
but very difficult.
like Adam Julyan on you tube... building a koi 'house' with a pond inside it...(oh if only...)
and even he still had to treat his koi from time to time....
but as i found out,
even when you purchase koi only from the very best quarantined sources they can still get in the pond.
i was fine until i took my winter covers off...

I can only echo what the others have said. There are many natural vectors for parasites to arrive but in a new pond you can bet they come with the fish. I have bought fish from 4 separate reputable dealers this year and all came with little guests of one sort or another. Skin flukes, Costa, chilodonella and whitespot. I set up a 1500 litre quarantine tank so I can give new arrivals time to show infections and it doesn’t cost the earth to treat a small volume of water.

Al'so stress is a big factor. For parasites.
Water quality. Weather temps. All things bring it on.
If I new the reasons and could stop them
I would be a billionaire. It's a fact of life of fish keeping. I am afraid. But boy what a challenge.
