How does this actually work then as i am new to this ... Purchase one koi via a draw so you don’t know what you will get, then grow on for a year and have a competition at the end of it?

Yes mate- along those lines..
Dealer, variety and budget set up front. Pics stored of each with measurements and then reviewed at an agreed future date. Dealer has more koi than participants so last person still gets a choice.
Judge and prize agreed up front.
cheers

Let’s see if IMC gets enough interest in his threat and take it from there, whether that’s me as the dealer or someone else.
Could be ideal for lots of us on the Forum and generate some friendly competition, banter and interest.
Cheers

Hi everyone. Thanks so much for all the interest so far. It’s looking very positive after only a couple of days.
Thank you to Gaz for the offer of supporting. I will give you a call this week. Just to be completely open with everyone, I have approached a couple of other dealers too (this was before Gaz offered). I have no personal preference so let’s see where this goes.
For all those who have asked the question how this might work, I see Gaz has provided some outline. This will be set out very clearly to everyone before any monetary commitment. However let me reassure you that I intend to work this so you all have a good chance of obtaining a koi you prefer. One way is once rules /timescales have been set, price, koi type and breeder/dealer confirmed, everyone can then decide if they would like to enter. Once money has been paid, dealer can then select koi on our behalf and we all get to see the whole selection of koi up front with time to rank whole group in order of personal preference. Your lists will be submitted and when the draw takes place which we can film and publish, names will then be selected out of a hat and each person will get their highest preference from their list based on what is still available as the draw progresses.
They have just run a very similar challenge on the Rasta koi group on Facebook with Michael Snaden from Yume Koi (the draw is on YouTube-I’ll find it and post a link late). Whilst these koi were £1,000 each, everyone got one of their highest preferences on list (most within top 5). If we have around 30 entrants as they did, I would hope we’ll be able to do something just as successful albeit with a different quality of koi.
One thing we all need to remember is....this is a fun challenge and on entering we all have to do so having made a decision to depart with money that may result in a koi that is further down our list than we’d hoped for.
Thd above is not set in stone yet but this is my current train of thought.
Thanks again everyone for taking the time to contribute to this thread. I’ll continue to monitor and collate responses and be back in touch in due course.
Link to follow re Rasta challenge and draw.
Cheers all.

Not personally brought a koi from Gaz yet but have dry goods and have been more than happy.
Also more than happy with Gaz ability in selecting fish.. I have on more then one occasion had to hold myself back in buying a koi that I was not ready to trust myself with.

Cheers Mike, I’m happy to help if I can if it goes ahead.
These things take a tremendous amount of organising...
Equally if the majority of entrees have an alternative preference that is cool too.
Cheers

Hi Guys,
What a great idea I have always wanted to get involved in something like this so I am in.
Budget £150, as for the Koi in my mind any variety would work for me it is all about the growing and enjoyment.
Cheers

I’m involved in a grow and show at the moment with my dealership. £75 for around 20cm. A vat of fish was shown on a video uploaded to his site and then at 7pm he started uploading them on its own page and it was basically first come first served. You buy the fish and your name is marked against it. He started in may and it will finish in August. It was 52 fish in Total, various types and even had a sneaky chag in there. And to top it off he runs a live webcam on the pond for feeding times.
I’d go up to £100 - Asagi, platinum ogon and goromo

£250 - Hi Utsuri, Doitsu Purachina or platinum Ogon (not sure on the difference) or kohaku.
I considered saying Showa, but think the only issue with going for Showa is there's a higher chance you end up with a fish that you really don't like, than other types. So I wonder if it's ideal for such a competition?

Grow and Show idea 2020-21
I do agree with you, on a development perspective tri colour much higher risk.
My preference would be an aka matsuba, as I already have a platinum ogon (FYI - Purachina is the same thing as far as I’m aware) I would really like a gin rin hi utsuri too though. Maybe it could be a mix of tosai from the same batch and breeder to help with getting more people involved.
(Hi utsuri, ki utsuri, platinum ogon, aka matsuba, yamabuki) I know a lot of breaders specialise in specific varieties so I don’t know if it would be possible
Single colour definitely has a less risk of a mutt

I'd be with you on the aka matsuba front too - i love those fish. But i just bought one from Kitsu Koi (more kin but that sort of colour)- doh!
One thought with the competition. I take it once the fish are paired with the respected owner they get sent out to the owner to grow on themselves (I'm probably stating the obvious there). If so then would there be two categories (depending on numbers etc )of heated and non heated?
I don't want it over complicated but just thinking those who are heated have a much better chance of growth. Again excuse my ignorance but is it all about length, pattern or both? I suppose if it's about pattern or overall quality of fish then there'd be no need to make the distinction between heated and not.

I’m not sure on what the specifics would be but I would assume it will not differ based on set up.
It would just get out of control..
Heated vs not heated
VAT vs main pond
Under vs over 2k gal
BHM vs CSM media
And so on and so on
There are so many different factors, this would be my first grow on, I’m just participating for the social/fun element of it..
