    Hi,
the big question is how many Koi and what size?

A 220 gallon/1000 litre container for K1 is good but will take a lot of K1 to fill.

You can buy K1 in 50L bag.

i would buy 2 bags add it and see how it looks and then buy more as required.

    Alex

A good ratio to begin with is 50/50 K1 to water.
As said above, start with 2 bags = 100 litres, but you will eventually have scope for something approaching 5 x that.

It matures very slowly so give it plenty of time before adding more. Basically respond to the demands of your water tests once it is mature and your fish stock grows.

thanks RipleyRich that does sound like a good starting point. I will be using my existing mature K1 from the Nexus i am removing so that gets it all started

It's of absolutely no consequence to me, but perhaps this might be of interest to you, bicolormoth (unless you're in the USA):

I think you could get about 500-550 litres of K1 in there BUT it’s going to take a huge amount of air to move that in such a big volume. I think you would need at least 250litre/min of air.

I had 300l turning over in a 600l IBC on a 70l air pump via 2 diffusers and I had to bleed some air off as it was too much.
You only need a gentle roll not a full on boil.

Worth a conversation with S&C Koi as they mentioned to me they have noticed a big difference in the performance of their moving beds with higher air (based on the same volume of media). Apparently more air has given them greater fish capacity and improved parameters!

similar to mine 1000 litre bio with 300 litres k1/k1 micro /helx13 via 2 ceramic 8" round diffusers on 95l evo aqua pump all of it is moving slightly on the boil side but all my media is matured medium - dark brown lighter brown is newly added
