Tree Juggling
....sounds like a strange pastime..lol
due to the building of the pergola some trees now need to be relocated, so i'm moving some of them around.
i took the pink 'shiraz' japanese acer out (not sure what to do with this now...)
and replaced it with an osakazuki i had growing in a corner...

My parents used to live on the coast in mablethorpe,
And had problems with windburn on thier acers.
People used to walk everywhere leaning at 15 degrees because of the wind there lol!
some varieties are more tolerant but they are all delicate when young.
They can cope with sun or wind but struggle with both.Last edited by davethefish1; 31-05-2020 at 12:45 AM.

You have an awsome garden Dave love it and love the acers.
I have four acers and really enjoy growing them but dont know that much about them, read somewhere that they dont like strong wind but enjoy the sun.John

i've found that different varieties have different sun/shade needs,
and some can change colour and get 'suntanned'..
the katsura and orange dream both have light green/yellow leaves and the tips can burn in the sun,
where as the shiraz has bright pink/ green variegated leaves but needs full sun for the leaves to get very pink.
and doesn't burn at the tips.
the dark red varieties like bloodgood and garnet seem to be able to cope better too.
but the root systems need a couple of years to mature to make them better able to cope with being in full sun.
i find they don't need as acidic a soil as azaleas ect... so use a bit of a mixture of composts.
but any good moisture retentive but free draining mix helps.

Yeah a bet. Am looking for a few nice evers to put round the garden but need to make sure little legs has room for the millions of seeds that she keeps planting lol. Got a red bamboo coming tomorrow that in a couple years the stems will look amazing just a shame it's takes so long to change colour. Stick a couple acers In front of it

Wow red bamboo looks stunning not seen that variety before.
Ive been after a large black bamboo for a couple of years but all the ones ive seen look scraggly...
A localish large plant nursery has them.
But its too big to transport and delivery is expensive and not that good. As they are really a trade place not set up for retail.

Lovely your garden is Dave,
I'm knackered after barrowing 2 ton of stone round the back.. I'm blaming AJ getting me thinking about the garden yesterday lol. Still need to raise some paving stones and rake it level proper yet too.
Anyway, so seeing as you are now our resident Monty Don... this is my old Acer looking somewhat sorry for itself, seeing as you say its the right time of year to prune what do you reckons best for it (assuming you can see enough in the pics)
Gets lovely red leaves but was looking a bit sparse in places last year. Just really don't know if I can be trusted to do anything with it or just to leave well alone lol.
