Talking Pipe work for filtration recommendations suppliers etc.

I'm at early stage of my first Koi pond build & was I was hoping you guys/girls whom "done that & got the tea shirt" might be able to point me to the best place to buy the solvent pipe work for a gravity filtration system... to connect bottom drain, easy pod, sieve, skimmer etc. without me having to sell a kidney!? ie on most Koi sites cost is £££ surely there must be cheaper options!!!?

    Cheers.

    not really no..
you can go cheaper and get waste/soil fittings, but in the grand scheme of things it's not that much cheaper than pressure.

that was my mistake, i will be going pressure next time round...

I got my pressure pipe from jbr plastics. It might be worth contacting them.

Coastal koi do competitively price pressure pipe fittings and valves etc. But the reality is, pressure pipe is just pricey stuff.

My approach to pipes was use pressure pipe (pp) on all pipework that is buried in concrete or goes through the pond wall I.e. bd, slimmer and returns. And then run pp up to the ball valves that isolate each pipe run.

Then on the filter side of the ball valves, for the majority of the pipe work i've used black 110mm waste pipe from toolstation/screwfix. And used rubber boots to make any connections to the filters and when going from 4" to 110mm pipe.

Whatever you use, it quickly adds up, that's for sure.

    Plumbers merchants, ABS pipework.
Mostly going to be commercial merchants who are currently restricted but worth a try.

Have a look at Coastal Koi

Most of my pipe came from JBR plastics but some i got from a local pipe merchant that specialises in industrial pipework, very little difference in price between the two places

For your valves and fittings go to Coastal Koi, I haven't found anyone who can beat their price on valves

    Hi
Thanks for taking the time to respond... I have checked out both sites, JBR plastics I'm sure is affiliated to this forum as it keeps getting plugged however I'm in Hampshire & they don't sell directly online, Coastal Koi seem a little regional but might try them first, also your method of using pressure pipe up to a point seems great advice although I'm only going for a gravity system
    Cheers

Lol. I don't think people are on commission from JBR. If they are then I'm missing out.

I think they get name dropped mainly because they make decent stuff for reasonable (comparatively speaking) prices e.g. aerated bottom drains, showers, skimmers. But also because they can build stuff to custom spec, which most places don't.

Their website is crap though. So if you want to use them drop them an email or call them.

Don’t think the site has too many “sponsors” as such, JBR certainly aren’t they’ve just been around a very long time.
The problem is, you can’t just nip down the road and get stuff, especially now however, your local World of Water will probably keep a good stock of parts but at a premium price. Handy if you need something in a hurry up though so it’s mail order unfortunately.
Whereabouts (Roughly) in Hampshire you? There’s a few of us around Surrey/Hants who might have stuff knocking around also. I’ve certainly got a couple of boxes of rubber boots and fittings left over I’ll need to shift st some point along with 300l of K1.

anything buried eg bottom drain should be in pressure pipe.
Above ground, standard solvent weld is fine. Don`t use push fit.

Might get shot down for this but we used 110mm drainage pipe into a kockneykoi bottom drain and then into a swept 90 up to the filter shed, both solvent weld, cost about £40 in total. Fittings in the shed are predominantly rubber couplings/boots.

Lol... been weighing it up, because mine is such a small build I probably gonna use pressure pipe underground as I don't want to be making repairs

For bottom drain use pressure pipe, it’s cheaper than digging it all up again when the normal stuff cracks. Buy it from JBR as previously stated, they are cheap and they do deliver.

@Slays: m00ny raised a timely reminder, there. Remember to buy pipe fittings that don't abruptly turn 90 degrees (i.e. an 'elbow').

Instead of abrupt elbows, try to use 'swept bends' (a larger smoother curve of pipe to accomplish the 90 degree change of direction).

It's still surprising how many people forget this simple aspect of pond plumbing.

Use 4” rubber elbows instead, much cheaper.

https://pondsuperstores.com/ *(Price Promise We'll Beat The lowest Price by a Full 5%)*

Prices seem good & website is great seems easy to find & purchase required items, only shame is that they don't have all the pipework I need!
