I dont believe a dog has done that you would see teeth Mark's. Our patch had one of mine. And my older dog jess had one.
All jumpers. The fish. Lucky I was there.
But both of them ragged it. Shaking there heads real fast to kill it. Like a rat killing.there would be teeth Mark's.
Our patch even spat it out. Then went for another go. The fish are still alive and well to this day. And staffi dogs have very strong jaws and teeth.

Thanks for posting the pic.
Anne knows her wildlife so if she says otters then that has to be considered.
Looks like the koi is female as I can see eggs.
The scratch marks down the sides look like claws (or possibly talons) that were used to hold the fish in position while eating.

Me and my brother saw a mink at one of club lakes, it was in its prime much bigger than what i thought it would be, jet black, very chunky and muscle bound, it would have the power to devour a fish no problem, not popular in most peoples books but it looked incredible, we were sitting on our chairs in a dug out swim , this thing was up and behind us at head level on the raised bank, we sat dead still and watched it for a few minutes before it came down the bank around 15ft away and swam off, i certainly would not want to corner that......

How about next doors cat RS said it had scratch marks, didn’t notice will take another look.
There was friend on mine that had next doors cat pulling his koi out of his pond, had a few over several weeks.

[QUOTE=RS2OOO;331070]Thanks for posting the pic.
Anne knows her wildlife …………..Now your talking rubbish RS, I know no more than the next person really
I love animals / wildlife etc and do take an interest but sadly not an expert, maybe in my next life who knows.
But as I said the photo I saw was more or less identical, fish bitten in half. and sometimes they wont eat the whole
kill but like the chase of another kill and just leave the remains for another opportunist to come along and clear up.
As Steve said.....mink is another one to consider ....… don't think it would be a cat that would chomp straight through
it....they like to play with whatever they have caught before killing it !!!!!! but who knows
The scratch marks down the sides look like claws (or possibly talons) that were used to hold the fish in position while eating.
Just how an Otter....will eat.
It would be really interesting ( maybe not nice to see ) if the poster could put up a night vision camera for a couple of weeks just
to see who the culprit is..... Don't leave us in suspense please.

I’d go with otter or mink.
The cuddly furry creatures with the cute faces are a bloody menace.

Something eating my Koi- ideas
Herons swallow the fish whole or toss them aside. I’d go with a mink. If so you’re in trouble they are tough to get rid of. I had a friend who had great luck with bobcat pea he bought on the internet. No I’m not kidding

I’d get an underwater camera and leave it running until
the next incident (if possible). That way we can all see Roys wife in her coat
Cheers

Well you all gave me the mink fear. I have to clear a few from a trout lake a few years ago.
They take some removing
Well the night vision confirmed that wasn’t the problem.
However it did alarm at a massive dog fox. It was in amazing shape. Came over the neighbours wall as they had been leaving food scraps out !!!!! That another story.
It came over the fence along the filter house and onto the raised wall. As was paying a real interest in the pond.
It now has a lead ear hole and won’t be worrying anymore fish.
Issue resolved

Did you actually see it take your fish and eat lt..... and leave half of it uneaten as in your photo ?
I still think its an otter......did you kill the fox
''It was paying a real interest in the pond'' yeah, probably looking for a drink of water .

I live too far away from water for it to be otters. I really though mink was top of the list but I was wrong. Going to leave the NV going another few night but I think the problem is resolved

My moneys still on an Otter....from the photo that was shown. A fox wouldn't chomp straight through it like that, looks
to neat and clean......he was probably waiting / hanging around for the next kill to clean up the leftovers ( that's if he's
still with us of course ) And otters will travel for quite a few miles to hunt .

I often watch foxes drink from the pond at last house and eat pond snails, you can sit out and they walk past quite happily, but soon flee if you move, though if you sat on a bench with a kebab they come begging,
a pond is a key item in a territory and you often see them scent mark and leave scat in the same spot over and over. sound like a mink and a clay print trap would help to determine if that's the case.
