    pump fed vortex multi

hi I have a 3 chamber plus vortex multi filter and I have herd a few people say the vortex is not as good being pump fed so put brushes in vortex and different media in brush chamber ?
is this right mine seems to be working fine I have a 20000 lph at 60% running both my filters . and when I cleaned filters Sunday which I do every week was debris in the bottom of vortex so gets me thinking its doing its job ???
what are your thoughts please .

If its working for you then dont try to fix a problem that isnt there.

Basically, to be properly effective a vortex needs to be large and operate at very slow flow from a bottom drain under gravity.

The reasons for this are that with gravity, the debris remains large and unbroken down, A pump mashes it up. Low flow allows the vortex principle to work by the solids falling from suspension into the bottom of the vortex chamber.

Most multi chamber filters with vortex do not work properly as the vortex is too small. Pump feeding it just adds to the problem.
You will get "some" vortex benefit, but the lower the flow the better.

Treating the vortex chamber as just another chamber, and setting it up as a true mechanical chamber will produce better results.
You have added brushes and found its working well. That is a good solution, juts maintenance heavy that`s all.

A lot of people have switched similar filters around and made the vortex the last chamber and turned it into a fluid bed.

Thanks you got my grey matter churning now lol ,
Would filling vortex with k1 in the first chamber work as a static then I could use last chamber which has grog in to a moving bed ?

Make yourself an eazy for the vortex, fairly cheap to do or put a sieve before and put media in the vortex.

Static K1 is less labour intensive than brushes, but will need cleaning more often as it traps more.
Personally, having experienced it, I would not do it without having a sieve or other mechanical filter before it. It blocks quickly and you will need to incorporate a good overflow.

IMO plastic medias like K1 and Hel-X are best left for fluid beds unless you have a pre-filter.
