    Pergola build

Got started today but not much to show for it just 4 posts in the ground...
Not so easy marking out dancing around a planted pond.
Having to compromise on post positions due to buried pipes, filters, trees ect...
Must be getting old... I'd of had this done in a day in my 20's lol!

That's the hard bit done Dave and now you have to carry on and finish it.

Know the feeling with slowing down, but now with being retired I now think it can be done tomorrow.

    Lovely garden Dave.

    Took a backwards step today...
Not 100% happy with a couple of the posts footings due to obstacles in the way
So I pulled them up and am re fixing them.
Don't want it to take off with the winters we've had recently...

    davethefish1,

Looking good. A wee bonsai tip here. If you want to make your pines look more bushy reduce the number of "candles" at the end of the branches to two and snap the "candles" in half. This stops pines getting too long and gangly and may encourage "back budding" on the bare parts of the branches (not guaranteed though).

    thanks kenny,

i've had a go at a bit of niwaki on the large black pine on the right of the pic,
i've only had it a year bought as a very large bushy lop sided potted tree.
so i back needled it, decandled the upper parts to try and encourage some growth lower down where the branches are a bit spindley due to lack of light.
and cut a lot of braches off to open it up.
my plan originally was to cut a lot more, but i'd already removed over 50% last year so thought i wait until this year before removing anymore.

the little pine low down at the back was my first attempt at wiring a tree, it's a bit skinny atm as it was only done this year but is starting to back bud quite well.
all the ideas i got were from niwakijake and heron bonsai's you tube channels.
i did think of hacking one of my big maples up to make a bonsai but the missus went wild when i said i'd lop the tree in half

    davethefish1,

With your pines just overfeed them all year, I do every two weeks a seaweed based/fish emulsion watering feed then every other two weeks some organic stuff. This really encourages growth and back bu7dding on your pines.

One of the problems with garden centre maples is that they are grown on stronger rootstock with the coloured top grafted on. The best bonsai (well ones for show anyway) tend to be grown on their own rootstock. One way of taking a cutting off your maple is to do an air layer at this time of year, this can be very successful and give you a number of wee trees without destroying the mother tree. Very successful with maples/acers.

    Thanks,
i might give the airlayering a go,
some of the maples need a few branches thinning out and i could get some good starter trees out of it.

think i've seen heron bonsai doing that with thier field maples,
strip an inch of bark around the stem, hormone rooting powder, wet sphagnum moss, and a plastic sheet wrapped around it.

fixed another post today bit of a hybrid method of doing it...
as my soil is just house bricks and reinforced concrete lumps 18" down, and i can't get any further without digging the hole 3ft wide

so i've settled on bolting 2 posts down to a wall foundation that was already there near the house(i removed the wall but couldn't do anything with the footings.
2ft wide and something over 3ft deep never did get to the bottom edge of it while digging my pond

the other 2 dug as far as i could, about 18" down hammered a couple of 2.5ft x100mm metposts in,
drilled holes for some side bolts in the fins and concreted them in.
i used 120kg of postmix on the first hole, one more to do tomorrow...

then i'll drill a 10mm coach bolt through each support to pin the post to it.

don't mind wood work, i hate any kind of digging and groundwork in this soil with a passion...

Might not look like i've done anything at all today
but a lot of designing, working out levels, and marking out was done

the pond is on a slope so i've had to compromise and lower the final height of far end,
or it would have been breaking building regs over 8ft tall at the house end!

Perfect, keep the ball of spagnum moss damp and within 6 weeks you have a few new wee trees to pot on. I dont remove the sphagnum moss ball when I put it in a pot. I found that I broke off too many of the roots as they seem very delicate.

    another day, another dollar...

having marked out the posts and levels yesterday,
i took them out of the steel post holders again to cut them to height, cut the halving joints, chamfer and ease the edges, and belt sand the posts smooth...

now i'm tired and covered in man glitter (sawdust)
and yes, i'm a messy worker

A little bit further along, front and back beams made,
But only fitted the front one,
as I'm having problems lining the 2 posts closest to the house up, due to the pump chamber being in the way.

So I hauled the post out again,
    And made a 4" x 4" godfather,
So I can clamp the post to it.
    Getting me another 100mm closer.

The final idea is to line the post up.
But I can't do that until I rebuild the pond,
    and remove the pump chamber.
