Pond help
Hi, I am currently looking to upgrade my set up for growing and selling koi in my poly tunnel.
I am thinking of putting in an AEM easy drum for each side, fed by a 4" bottom drain and then using the 1 outlet into a bio chamber with 2 outlets.
On 1 of the outlets im thinking of putting an ASHP and then a 10,000lph variflow pump into a shower as both ponds will circulate through it, heating both ponds. The other outlet will be a 10,000lph variflow pump straight into a bakki shower/trickle tower. The drum filter has a UVC built in and I want to stock the ponds with 300/400 fish hence the bio chamber and the shower filter. I will be buying all my fish from the same supplier and quarantining them first before they go into any of the ponds. I am looking at each pond being just under 700 gallons with a box welded liner.
Ive attached a diagram of what im thinking but I need some help/advice as to whether it would work or not and if it doesn't can you please leave improvements below.
Cheers.

It would work, but personally I’d want to keep them all on separate systems, if you have an issue/parasites/bacterial problem in one pond it’ll transfer to the other

I did think that myself but if I did get a parasite it would simply mean me treating both ponds, in the long run it might be more cost effective to run it this way as another drum is £1000 so an extra £2000, I quarantine them anyway and they have been quarantined before they get to me. Is it worth spending an extra £2000 just to keep them separate or just buying a treatment once in a blue moon? Ive never had a parasite/bacteria problem (touch wood) but I know how devastating they can be

Hi - I sell koi and faced a similar quandary. I decided more was better than one and am now on 5 separate systems. Parasites, water quality, constant new introductions, sourcing from various suppliers, maintaining traceability, QT, equipment issues when replying on one pond will all mean you will face periods where you can’t have any sales activity.... that was my logic anyway mate.

I am only just starting out and the thing that has put me off having one on each tank is the 2 stages of quarantine they go through (in a separate pond), the cost of the filters, and the fact I buy all my koi from the same place. If I was to buy my koi from 3 different dealers and not quarantine them I could warrant the extra cost but for now I can't, I could always add individual filters on though if I wanted?

If its setup cost could you not run 2x1000 gal ponds on separate systems and add on when funds allow and demand is kicking down your door . Rome in a day and all that

Is there any particular reason why it’s 4 separate ponds and not just two longer ones?
would mean only 2 pumps not 4, 2 showers not 4.

Its simply so I can stock different things separately. Im only a hobbyist but im in the trade and looking to see whether it would be worth selling fish as a thing on the side but ill want to accommodate for everyone by stocking fish in different sizes and qualities. They'll all be Japanese as I don't want to sell Israeli or English but with 4 ponds I can have 2 for tosai, 1 for nisai and then another for the individually priced fish

Not fit 2x700 and 2x1000 for bigger fish ? Is 2 full length ponds not possible as you would have more volume due to not having space between the tanks . Run 2 drums would be bigger drums tho

I could run 2 ponds, im open to ideas its just what I had come up with in my head. Id be wanting at least 2 fair sized ponds to grow tosai and then add some of what I have left this season into another pond and then the individually priced in another. I set off looking at 8 small ponds (4 down each side) but I need the room in the tanks for the tosai to grow properly and its unfair having fish 45cm+ in such a small pond

Mine are all from one supplier too mate, however when ‘things happen’ (and they do) it’s better to have the issue as limited as possible - particularly if your ethics and integrity are to remain in tact.
I agree with AJM - Rome etc.... it’s took me a few years and I’m constantly reinvesting to improve my set up.
Koi are a great way to spend a lot of £££

I completely agree, I know it’s not about getting it all done in one day but while I have the cash to do it I might aswell get as much of it done as possible, I just don’t want to be in the same situation as last year putting polytunnels up and setting tanks up in 2ft of sludge with no light.
