    Raising and dropping water Temperature

I have been looking around for information on how fast water temperatures can safely be increased and decreased for koi.

Can seem to find any information on this.

    Thanks in advance

    Raising and dropping water Temperature

Thanks Fred the article is great. If accurate it suggests water temperatures can fluctuate 1-3 degrees a day in 24 hr cycle. And that the koi should not have a sudden 5 degree change (no mention of what sudden is). It also mentions that increased temperature change is less of an issue than a drop.

There is also a related article that says

“there is a natural few degree temperature change over a 24 hour period. However, moving Koi between ponds with a temperature variance of more than 3C or 4C may cause thermal shock and even death.

Temperatures should be gradually adjusted between bags and ponds before the introduction of Koi. A temperature change of 0.2C/min can usually be tolerated.”

Reason I asked is I have just moved 5 tiny 3 inch inside and I was worried the temperature rise could be a problem..

I have been monitoring it and it has rised 1.2 degrees in 5 hrs so that is well within the mentioned 0.2c per minute.

If I have a sick koi in main pond. And I need to get it into my qt. Which is heated with grow ons in the tank. At say 20 c. And say the pond is at 9c. I bring the grow on down by 2 degrees a day until it's at around14 c

I then mix the water from grow on. And the pond into a large koi bowl with themomiter.
That is then about 11 or 12c.
I then put the fish in the bowl. Leave the ill fish in there for about 40 minutes then put it in the qt grow on tank. And then up the tempreture 1 degree a day.
Always works ok. I also do it that way if transferring grow ons to the pond

Hi Mike, if you have moved them indoors I presume its warmer there.

If so that is fine as long as gradually, koi dont like going warm to cold but cold to warm is ok as long as not too sudden.
