I had an 8kW system put in past March. We have saved around £1000 in electricity bill and had a FIT payment of £480 between March and November 2019.
Part of our saving has been made by going onto an EV tariff that gives cheap units overnight when we do buy from the grid. I tend to charge my car up on solar during the day whereas the Tesla is only here at night so needs to be grid charged. We have been experimenting with running the pond ASHP only part of the day to take advantage of cheap overnight units after the car finishes charging, then solar energy til the sun goes down in the afternoon.
It is certainly possible for a PV system to pay for itself. Our predicted yield had our system paying for itself over 15 years, but that didn't take into account our high usage. Based on actual yield so far we are looking at around 7 years until its paid for itself, mostly in electricity and gas bill savings (we have an iBoost heating the hot water using any spare solar in the daytime so save gas too).
On a normal spring or summer day the solar power more than covers what the pond uses, in addition to general house use. Dull days in the winter it doesn't quite cover it though. You need to look at an overview of the year to decide if the numbers.stack up for your particular situation.2016 new 6000 gallon pond

I have some Videos on you tube my channel have a small 480w solar system with batters and not run it into summer yet but winter time I can run the pond on solar for about 3 - 4 hours a day and summer time I'm hope full for 14 -16 hours every thing going on the pond its about 400w summer winter 180w is it worth it will you get your money back in the end you are going to have to watch this space for 5 - 6 years. but one thing it gives you is backup for the main power. Should it go out the pond will run for 4 hours without sun longer if the suns out

Nice work Devon.
I like your channel by the way and your view is tremendous.
I have been toying with the idea of some solar panels, are these kits off eBay and so forth any good?
Totting up my pond electric all on full chat...
40w UV
150w x 3 pumps
70w Air
Let’s say 750w with some spare or round it up to 1kW cause I like round numbers, what am I looking at in the way of kit?
I might replace 2 of the pumps with 1 flowfriend yet, haven’t decided if I can be bothered to mess around with the pipework so in theory I could probably get away with 500W I suspect.
Dammit...I wish the Mrs has let me build my airlift version ggrrrr.

If you have not watched all the videos on the solar I'm into it now for around the £600 mark if I had to pay for the battery's I have as well it would be close to a grand spent. Knowing what I do now I would go a different path with a small plug in mains inverter and the system I have now. Do your research this set up you just plug in to a socket off the panels and it makes what it makes put's it into your ring main and you save 100% on what it puts into the house. link to the panels I got and you need a grid tie inverter that can make 24v dc into 240v ac like the 2nd link.

Just fitted the new Jebao pump today . Currently ticking over at 90W , as opposed to 285W with the old pump . I reckon thats a saving of around £20 per month . Happy days .

Best money saving thing you can do is swap out your old pumps for the new wave of low watt water pumps
Running heater at low temp?
Covering the pond with polycarb should be enough to stop water temps dipping below 6C for the most...
