moving beds k1
Hi all, just looking at my 3 moving beds today to see if they need a clean before spring ,In the nexus 210 and the 3 moving beds the k1 is a light brown and adds up to about 275lt of k1 k3 . After looking at a mates filter last weekend it looked like his k1 was bark brown and looked older than mine . His pond is only about a year old mine is over 4 years, is it that i have 3 times the k1 in the filter or too much k1 . I have good water and heat and feed all year .

Hi Sammy, I asked the same question on here a while back, my k1 moving bed is two yrs old in the present filter and prior to that was in a nexus for over ten years and it is still light brown.
I was told not to worry as my readings are all fine,a lot of folk pp their k1 first which gives the media a brownish tint but I didn't.
So, I wouldn't worry Sammy as long as your readings are fine that is what counts.John

You can never have to much media. I pp mine as I got it. So long as the air is turning it over.
As for the brown. The pp and other chemicals turn it different colours. Even food for that matter.
The food I am using now leaves a brown tint on the water. In my grow on QT.So I bet a pound to a penny its tinting my k1 media.
Even though its brownish.
As john said if your water readings are good. Your ok.
Clean the waste out. The bottom of your filter to waste. But you should nt need to clean the k1 at all. If the air is good in there

Thanks freddyboy, I only do the bins at this time of year to take out any fines, i added a shower last year so will look at that at the same time to see how that has done, that has 30 kg of alfagrog and some jap matting in the top for fines. as for the nexus that gets a clean every week. The drum does the job but you do get fines in the nexus thats why i do it .the pond is at 18 and still feeding .At the end of the mouth i will drop down to about 14 till the end of march .

Hi sammy. I clean my nexus out twice a year. Or more to the point. Inspect it.
I also have a draco drum on mine. But still get very fine fines in there. So I take the media out in October. Have a look. And the inspect about april may time. I ended up putting 5 airlines in there of a manifold.
As I don t think the nexus air ring on it's own was doing a very good job.
Since adding them in the bottom of the nexus. It's always now clean on inspection.
Plus i still keep the main ring running as well.
The draco drum is the best bit of kit i bought on the pond. Like you
I am thinking of adding a shower on the pond this spring or summer.

Hi fred, i use both parts of the nexus as a normal filter and that helps me with water changes , only have a trickle in and over flow the drum takes from the clean side ,all adds up to 10% a week for me .

Essentially the less media you have the browner it will get as its supporting sufficient bacteria on a smaller surface area.
If you had 2 identical ponds, with identical fish load and feeding regime, and Pnd 1 has 100 litres K1, but Pond 2 has 50 litres K1, the Pond 2`s media will likely be darker as there will be the same bacteria occupying a small surface.
This is a generalisation obviously, but hopefully makes some sense.
As others have said. If your fish are happy and water tests ok, no worries
