Just got my Sakai Kohaku from the barn delivered today. It’s now 20cm. A little bit of secondary already ..., we’ll see how this develops. I purchased primarily to learn .... so how it develops compared to why I chose the koi.
thanks. Ian

Nice, mine are doing good, both growing, only really noticed a cpl weeks ago. Kohaku has caught up with the sanke in size now and is developing a bit of size in the back. mine are still quite shy but they do have to fight for the food as they are in with a chag and a mukashi

Hi there. Love them. They look great. Seem to be developing (unsurprisingly) like mine re body.

They look pretty similar, I reckon I've had about 2cm growth and a little bit of filling out, they have really started eating this week with the water being in the 20s

The Sanke looks great, really like the way it's developing. Think you picked well there. I wouldn't have looked twice at it, just didn't see the potential like you have.

I think what i saw was the body line was quite good on the sanke, the beni on the head was equal, had an ok 3 step kohaku pattern and enough sumi that if it tightened up and shrunk down a bit it would still be there and no real underlying sumi that could come up and look patchy. I prefer sanke with lots of white and flecks of sumi myself

Hi Sephuk,
I had my SFF Kohaku out today. Went in pond on 19 Feb @ 19cm. Came out 4 months later today at 31cm. Looks like it’s put some body on too. A little secondary beni but not too worried about that for the price paid.
How are your two getting along?

I really like seeing progression photo’s. helps with me understanding development. thanks for sharing. You got some great growth there assume you have been heated? Beni seems to have dulled down is the fish inside?

I’m still a new boy to the koi keeping but I’m asuming that is prity impressive growth rate for that amount of time! Keeping my koi for nearly a year now and they have grown but no where near that amount even two combined. How do you get these growth rates, or improve as it’s something i would like to improve on! Thanks

Hi there.
I am no expert and was honestly surprised by this growth rate. I have had tosai that have grown this much in one year. For example, a Yamabuki Ogon tosai that would never come and feed with the main group. This Kohaku is quite bullish amongst its 7 60cm plus koi friends! So sometimes I think there is a great element of luck involved based on each koi and its own behaviours.
That said, there are many things that are within our gift we can control to put the odds of good growth on our side.
- water temp.
- food quality/type/volume fed.
- choice of fish (body shape with potential for growth).
- size and age when purchased.
- breeder.
- bloodline/genetics.
- pond water quality.
- number of koi in pond.
- pond design and filtration system.
- sourcing koi from reputable dealer
(I’m sure there are others).
Genetics, bloodline and choice of koi (e.g, body shape) are probably the major players here before you even get a koi in your pond.
It’s not just about speedy growth for me but as important quality of koi development including the typical things like body shape, skin quality, pattern etc.
Is rapid growth a good thing? Now that’s another question!!!!!

Hi.
Heated yes, Koi in 5000g with only 7 other larger koi outside. I don’t know Sakai Fish Farm koi well and how they typically develop. The colour might simply reflect changes in natural lighting when photos were taken (?). You are right it does look lighter. I’ll have to find out.
Thanks.

That is doing well! Ill do mine when I get a minute, Beni looks like mine, its just where they are growing it looks weaker the Beni kind of stretches in-between the scales giving the impression of it being lighter it will go back to normal after a bit when the temps dip below 20

Running heater at low temp?
Covering the pond with polycarb should be enough to stop water temps dipping below 6C for the most...
