pictures plus some advice needed on perging your pumps

    Hi all,

some pics of the skimmer box cover and insualtion that i have added to the filter housing, temperature outside right now is 8.1 degrees pond temperature is currently 10.4 degrees.

Perging your pumps, could someone please explain how you do this, if you look at the last few photo's you will see i have the plunger style pipe blocks, i am usnure if i fully closed these two plungers what to do with the two pumps? run slow / flat out or turn off? how long do you keep the plungers down for ? would appreciate your help please on this matter, many thanks Steve.

Thanks for the pics Steve, love your build, pure quality and a nice clean finish to everything.

    Not sure about purging pumps?
Do you mean purging bottom drain and pipework?

I do what i call mini purges, i keep everything running as is, turn the drum off close the skimmer and bottom drain valve, soon as i hear the pumps start to gurgle open the drain valve. i do this 3 or 4 times every cpl weeks. its how i do the indoor vat too that has a clear drain cover and it takes 2-3 purges to clean the drain

    Thanks Sephuk,
I can see a plunger style drain valve on my skimmer pipework and on the bottom drain (both as shown in the photo) and there is another smaller one which is on the pipework which returns water back to the pond on the other side of my filter box so do I close all three or just the skimmer and BD valves, what about the drum filter itself do I leave this turned on as usual and do you alter the pump settings?? cheers Steve

Nope keep return lines open, it's just the line from the pond to the filter you are cleaning

I run a clean cycle on the drum 1st then turn the drum off so when I've purged a few times I can tell if I've caught much if the water level is low once the valves are all re open. I don't change any pump settings, the sudden rush of water is more than enough to get any settled bits in you drain and pies moving

ok thank you so I do the following

    • plunge both valves downwards to stop the water flow into the filter box from the skimmer and the BD
    • Keep the drum filter turned on as usual
    • Keep both pumps running for the BD and the skimmer pipework
    • Assume this will lower the water level in the filter box to a point where the pumps cannot pull anymore water through the pipework, then once you release the valves the water pressure in the pipework will free up any debris that my of built up in the pipework ??

    Almost!

    Run a clean

    Switch off drum

Push the skimmer and drain valves to close

Your pump/pumps with start emptying the drum so as soon as you hear a sucking sound or anything different pull the drain valve up and let the drum fill again. Once full close the valve again and repeat a few more times

Open skimmer and drain valves and Have a look at the clean side of the drum, if the water is lower than the dirty side you caught some stuff pictures plus some advice needed on perging your pumps

Turn drum on again and run a clean, then carry on with your day pictures plus some advice needed on perging your pumps

How I purge my bottom drain from nexus
    Draco drum
I have a 4 inch ball valve on bd line before
    The nexus.

I shut that. So now no water going into nexus. And turn drum off.

I leave ball valve open to pond so pump is still running. Which is on my return line to pond

I then pump half my nexus 320 filter into my pond.

When the nexus is half empty I then turn my draco drum back on.
And open the 4 inch bottom drain 4 inch valve.

And the water rushes into the drum nexus
Getting cleaned at the same time.
    Job done.

It's the space in the nexus I need that I have pumped out.
For the gravity fed water to fill back up that
Causes the rush of water to purge and clean the pipe.

And by pumping the water into the pond no need for topping back up.

According to Darren at absolute you need 12000l/hr to keep a bottom drain pipe clean .I have always turned the 20000 vario pump up to max for 5 mins every day
