    Filter housing all finished....

pics of the filter housing, all pipes are lagged so apart from putting some celotex on the inside of the housing there is nothing more I can do to keep my little babies warm for the winter so we will just have to see how things go...… the only thing i have to sort is out how i am going to hold the roof up, the roof does go back vertical against the window frame so some sort of hook or latch is needed one for each end, it is heavy being made out of 25mm ply so whatever i use needs to be quite strong.....any ideas ???

I used 2 gas struts to lift my cover. No fiddly hooks at opposite ends to deal with.

    Hi Rayman,
I originally thought about them but unsure where I would attach them and what pressure I would need, the lid must be best part of 30k and to lift to an upright position or near it would require quite long struts of around a 100cm extended, do you think you could take a picture of how you attached your struts either end, thank you Steve.

    * just been checking out some applications online and different strength in N on gasspringshopuk they have a handy calculator so I will probably do this Rayman but would be good to see how you attached yours, I assume the fixing points need to be well anchored to cope with the pressure? thanks Steve.

You can buy versions that you can adjust the pressure. Look at sgs-engineering.com they also come in different lengths. You need a rough idea of the weight to purchase the correct size and work out your lifting height based on where you attach it to get the approximate length. Bith mine are attached in the same way.

As Rayman says, gas struts are well worth the effort of doing a few calculations.

Just remember if you're going to use say 4 struts along the length of the cover you'll need to divide the required lifting force between them.

My lid is about 90kg, and each strut capable of 80KG, so they need a good tug to close the lid and I had to put loads of extra screws and glue in the baton they're attached to so they dont rip the lid apart. Only paid around £12 the pair off eBay.

mmmm that's worrying me I would be well miffed with myself if I destroyed the lid, to secure the tops of the struts did you have to drill down through your lid to bolt the support in place? I have just had a firestone rubber roof bonded on so I am worried about water integrity and ruining the expensive rubber work I had done, now the wife will have me round ones if I did that to help reduce potential damage I need some sort of metal plates to help spread the force of the strut at each end ?? thanks for your help on this matter Rayman and RS, Much appreciated guys..... Steve.

Very tidy where did you get the pvc cladding does it come in sheets what size are they and did you just screw onto timber my filterhouse is block built covered with timber screwed to blocks but that would be far easier to maintain

I drilled through the top of my lid. Just put a dollop of clear silicon into the hole and then bolt in. It will stop water getting in.

Hi Dave, unsure on the cladding size, I can find out for you if you like, if you look back at my other thread regarding the build you can see the wooden frame that the cladding was attached too, the doors simply lift out but are a nice tight waterproof fit as they sit within a recess on the frame, the roof is made from 25mm ply which has been covered in rubber just like they do on flat roofs, glue was heat treated etc to help bond and smooth out the ripples and edging was used along the front, the rubber was weathered and sealed onto the brickwork and then covered with the white trim so its aesthetically pleasing , the builder has his own double glazing business and does flat roofs as well so he had materials to hand, I nearly went wooden cladding when looking at options but the PVC as you say is easy to keep clean and should be maintenance free..... cheers Steve

    Ha!
Like you, the struts were an afterthought and I didn't want to damage the roof covering so I glued batons to the inside of the lid and then screwed them from the inside making sure the screws were no longer than the thickness of the baton plus the 18mm lid and thus wouldn't poke through the outside covering.

My struts were so strong they moved the baton and bent the screws!

Also you will need to play around with the positioning of the struts to get a smooth open and closing action and to make sure the lid stays down when closed.

I'll post some photos when next on the PC, but they don't look much different to Rayman's, except his are neater lol.

    Rayman,

I noticed the strut bracket retaining screw is being pulled away in your pic. Be careful that doesn't fail and the lid knocks you on the head.

Due to the force of mine I regularly check the brackets. Without the struts the lid is only just liftable with one hand, it would kill me if it came down on my head.

Great spot that, I hadn't noticed so thanks. I have a failsafe block that I use whenever it is open just in case it did ever fail.
