    Fish Flap and roof insulation

with the cold weather we've been having recently,
there's been a lot of condensation on the inside of the filter house roof, the wood was wet and starting to get black mould spots.

so after drying it out with an oil filled radiator over night.
i sealed it with wood stain, then insulated it it with 50mm celotex.

    the fish flap
was already done but makes it so much easier to feed the fish...

    Hi Dave,

the flap looks great, how did you do that?? I could do with one myself to save keep lifting up a whole section of polycarb each time I visit the pond to feed them, been using that celotex myself seems to be a good insulation....

    Fish Flap and roof insulation

Also interested to know how the flap is hinged, I thought of adding a flap but did not want to make a rash decision and regret it. IMG_2388.jpg

I have to prod it open with a piece of wood, not ideal

pretty easy, i just cut the flap with a fine toothed jigsaw, sanded the cut edges and hoovered out the swarf.
then used '3M venture all weather tape' to make a hinge and seal the cut edges.
the tape seems to be holding up ok so far...

    here's where i got the tape from ( i got the 75mm x 25m)

    https://www.hadleigh-tapes.co.uk/new...e_2779555.html

and here's a you tube video from nick gray where he shows how it's done.
    (flap at 2 minutes in.)

yeah it's good stuff mate, i bought a load years ago to insulate my garage conversion in 2008

    Fish Flap and roof insulation-insulation-jpg

and then more recently to insulate the cabin.
i insulated the void under the floorboards but never got round to doing the internal roof.
but i've used most of it insulating my pond and filters...

now the missus wants to know when the rest of the cabin is being done...

when i re dig my new pond i'll be using it to completely line the pond to save on heating bills...

    Dave..or anyone else
Gotta get around to sorting covers out ASAP. Not sure of the simplest way.
Pond is about 4m x 4m with one corner chamfered.
Quite liking “Devon koi pond” method of sliding polycarbonate into grooves in timber.
Would certainly be easier to store behind the pond.
Was thinking maybe 4x2 or 6x2 timbers to avoid sagging with 1m wide sheets of 16mm polycarbonate.
    Any other genius ideas?

4mtrs is quite a span without sagging.
I'd be tempted to make one side slightly higher or with an apex to help with run off.

    Not sure even 6x2 wouldn't sag a little over a 4mtr span...
But with one side higher would still run off...

Also 16mm is quite flexible so would need good all round support. And at 1mtr wide might sag across the width?
Someone who has 16mm poly might have a better idea as I got the 35mm.

    Thanks mate.
The actual “clear span” is closer to 3.6. My pergola timbers are 6x2 and seem ok but aren’t carrying any weight.
Good thinking about the thickness...I’ll consider going up to 25mm then.
I planned on having a slight fall so water can run off and keep a small air gap also.

    Hi BCC
35mm even though slightly heavier is actually more stable and less prone to sagging than anything thinner, this might help with your spanning issue, i would of thought 6x2 would be strong enough if used upright (mounted on the 2") Steve

I’ll get price for 35mm then.
One of the roofing places has a sale on at the moment, 25% off iirc so I’ll get in quick.
    Not cheap is it?

Don't know what prices you've had for polycarbonate.
But here's the place I got mine from
They do stock sheets and made to order.

    https://www.varicoltd.com

    4mtr x 1050mm 35mm clear is £102 inc vat
    Edit £18 for delivery

I got a 7 wall 25mm large sheet big enough to mean I just needed 1 sheet. My pond is not large. I did have issues moving it to the garden had to go over the garage roof.

It’s pretty robust I have no sagging

That’s the place, 25% off, still working out to be £400 quid odd plus the timber, tape etc.
Might investigate the pool covering stuff like Fred has given the cost and hassle of storing PC.
Pretty sure is about £125 for the size I need plus a lady with a big sewing machine to hem it up and put some eyelets in.
Hmmmm this hobby don’t half cost some bloody money eh?
