Epic filter
Been watching Peter Waddingtons (waddy) new you tubes, very interesting with his new filter.
Would put a link up but dont know how so you will have to find them your self.
For those that dont know Peter is a very long established koi keeper/ dealer who has written books and loads of articles he is based in the N.W.

I've seen these videos John and find myself with more questions than answers by the end of them.
Also read a lot on his website in general and am not always convinced about what I've read, but I'm just a mere hobbyist and this guy has been heavily involved in the Koi scene for many years so he must know his stuff.
As a box filter its certainly prettier and more compact than an open top multibay, but its double or even triple the price.
I hate knocking people who have worked so hard to achieve something in a niche market that often lacks proper R&D and investment, but I personally think this is 10-15 years too late.

I also think that empty half of the box should contain some sort of bio chamber that is additional to the matting.
Imagine if the first half of the chamber was a drum of some design, and the 2nd half of the chamber was an anoxic bio section of some design, now that would be innovative and I'd pay good money for it.

Agree with you Rs, but I find the guy so interesting and believe if he says it works so well but like you say going back in time.

If you’re after something like this just get an evolve.
It’s an “Eric/Epic” with a drum in front .
Pete is great but he’s mad as a box of frogs lol

I once looked at an eric filter as I was building my pond.
I decided very much against it when I realised how rude and arrogant peter waddington and his side kick, susan campbell was when anyone mentioned a drum filter.
Yes, waddy knows his stuff koi wise but his attitude can be very bad at times and his dog ( susan Campbell) is even worse.
Infact, it was her who eventually put me off buying an eric filter with her continuous arguing and belittling of others just because they had drum filters.
I believe that Peter waddington is also in facebook jail almost every month?
What does that say about the way he is?
As for susan Campbell.....that dog needs locking up before it starts a war.

Think it looks abit poo and what’s with the return height? I’m thinking it maybe used as an overflow when used gravity fed but haven’t put any thought into how it’s effected when pump fed

I personally thought from the start that this was just a free advertising tactic from P.W. But this as proven to be a Great mistake on P.W behalf!

Perhaps it was a cynical ploy, by P.W., as you've described, or perhaps not (and I'm not saying you're wrong). However, 'Attribution Error' (look it up in psychology literature) teaches us to be cautious of assuming our assumptions about the motives underlying others' behaviour are accurate
Even if it perhaps may have been a cynical ploy, it was, after all, a harmless thing to offer a free product, (I'm speaking generally, now; not aimed specifically at you) so I see no reason for any of us here, or on youtube, to twist the knife about a free product not meeting someone's expectations. Constructive criticism, yes, and hopefully someone may learn from such criticism to the betterment of the product, and thereby to the betterment of future customers of that product.
I feel the product in question is potentially adequate as a biofilter, but rather naive in its scale and in its execution, and I concur with some other commenters (not just on this forum) that brush prefilters are woefully outdated, outmoded, and inefficient 'technology' (and they turn owners into unwilling daily-maintenance-slaves), so a sieve, mechanical K1 type filter, or (better) an RDF or EBF would be more than helpful prior to an ERIC or EPIC filter, and anyone suggesting that certainly wouldn't deserve being admonished for suggesting it. However, that then rather begs the question as to why one would spend several hundred quid on a glorified japmat chamber, when such a simple thing is EASILY buildable by even a novice DIYer, and could be legitimately swapped for an equally easily-buildable moving-bed K1/Hel-X13 filter, with money saved being put towards a much-needed RDF.
...so, I find the whole state of affairs rather bemusing - I KNOW PW is not a naive novice, so I am bemused at witnessing someone's video showing a (frankly) naively-scaled (as in needs to be much larger to be fit-for-purpose, both in terms of biological capacity & in terms of appropriate flow-rate) and somewhat naively-designed commercial product (as in it appears, from what I can see in said video, to offer little advance over decades-old multi-bay japmat filters. At least the older ERIC's 'endless river' concept incorporated space between the japmat layers, for free vertical flow of bubbles and free horizontal flow of water - what I see in that youtube video is both of these things being rather obstructed, so it seems like a step backwards from the ERIC, unless, perhaps, the matting cartridges have been accidentally misconfigured).
It's all a bit of an odd situation, but, rather than twisting the knife, I simply hope PW will learn from the little avalanche of criticism and step up his game, rather than taking offence.Last edited by MustBeSomethingInTheWater; 05-11-2019 at 01:57 AM.

Unfortunately, before I even posted a comment on this thread, I reviewed some of P.Ws Epic related videos and only because the videos left so many questions unanswered I read the comments underneath, and I'm sorry to say that his defensive attitude in response to genuine questions were enough for me to determine that he is unlikely to learn from any form of criticism.
