What Size tank for grow on

After seeing loads of people on here having so much fun and learning as they go with fry as they develop am toying with the idea for next year . What size water tank would be needed only going to start with 5 fry maybe 10 at the very most . Space is limited I was thinking about 1m2 so a little under 220 gal ? Could I go smaller if needed or is that way to small as it is

Great question, but a subjective one, I'd say around the 300 mark as a starting point ideally 500+, hospital tank you'd need to a starting point of 800 minium, been told 1000 gals otherwise the fish will stress

Trouble with around 200 gals is that you'll be snookered once they gain anysize over 6"'s probably get away with 4 or 5 max

Hi Aj, A few use an Ibc tank which is 220 gals and can be picked up cheap as long as they have been used for food grade.

They are the size of a pallet, cut the top off and away you go,they even have a drain valve which is handy.

I used to have a 200gal tank and raised 25 young koi in it over winter but it was a bit small for that many so now have a 350gal one.
You need good filtration especially the settlement to get rid of the poo.

My tank is 500 gallons. And on the hospital
Qt side of things. I have had fish in there 3 at a time. 35 to 40 cm. With 12 small grow on s and come out the other side. Saving there lifes. But it is very mature. Water parameter wise.
And no fish was stressing. As John says
    Ibc tanks are a start.
If you build one AJ. And your tight for space. Go deeper. My tank is 4 1/2 feet deep.Mine was built by hand
With wood and celotex in the panels then fiber glassed bottom drain.
Best thing I ever did.a mate built it. Depends what you needed it for. First and foremost mine was for QT. The grow on for me came later.
And what joy I have had out of it.

Got plenty of light in there Fred??.

My opinion is based on advice I've had and continue to have, like you say a strong well matured system will always help, I like your idea of plenty of depth it makes a lot of sense.

Your right though the bigger volume the better Tom. But most fish start very small and then grow. And once grown. Transfare to the pond. Or give some away.
So in reality there not staying in the QT grow on that long. The longest I'll fish have been in there is a month to 2 months.
The longest I have had grow on s in the tank is 10 months. 12 little ones maximum.
To grow on. And that works on my system.
It's getting rid of them. The ones you don t want to keep. Is the problem
    But it is fun.

I have 2 strip lights. One middle of the shed. And one strip light above tank. Which is a day and night bulb for the fish colour.
That's on a timer. Set for the seasons.
Goes off now at 17.00pm and comes back on at 0630am.

I perhaps shouldn't admit this, but I once raised one hundred or so (minus just a few losses) 6 - 8 week old koi fry from New Forest in a ............ cast iron bathtub ..... using a black box type pond filter and an aquarium heater. I did move them on to other peoples and my own pond once they got above two inches though.

Wouldn't have liked to keep them in there much longer but with daily water changes and constant testing of parameters it actually went very well for such a small volume of water.

This has got me thinking about building something in the shed now but that may mean re-homing the two motorbikes that currently live in there, though now I'm about to hit 50 with a disabled wife and mentally ill adult daughter relying on me that could be a wise move i suppose. Decisions decisions....

i have an EZ pond vat thats 500 Gallon and id say it is quite big if you havent got the space, before buying the 500 G i did look at a 300 Gallon from a local place that was a lot smaller in comparison

Im really keen to have a QT/Grow on facility, my pond ain't gonna be completed till mid/end of spring, getting to cold for fibreglassing, plus it never stops raining to dry pond out and stop water leaching into pond. So need a Koi fix but haven't anywhere to put tank at minute shed and garage choca bloc

Sorry to read about the Wife and Daughter, got your hands full there lot of hard work, Best Wishes to you.

On the subject of bikes I sold my bike when I started pond build, needed the room and the money, haven't had time to miss it yet though, plus Im rapidly approaches 59 so probably best its gone considering today's roads and its user's

EZ pond 500 gal tank is my plan, although I'm now thinking of building one in my filter house, 7ft x 3ft x 4'6" high although not sure it would be wise to fibreglass in filter house as I plan to have it open plan onto the pond, afraid of the fumes.

About the same dimensions as my tank 4 ft wide. Same length and depth.
On the glassing side of things. In my shed
The door was open. Yes the fumes was strong. But we both kept going outside for a breather. And a cuppa. Then back in.
If I did it again. I would hire an extractor fan. Masks are a must. Gloves obviously.
We cut all the matting to size before hand.
Chamfer the corners with celotex for flow.
Then glassed the sides and bottom of the tank. Left the top coat for 24 hours. Then gave it a good sanding. Then put flow coat on. Left it for another 24 hours. Then filled it up with normal tap water. Had a little leak in 2x places bottom drain and one side. Emptied water out. Gave another sanding bottom drain for keying. And put some more matting on where leaks where.
Then top coat again other them areas.
Left for 24 hours. And there was no leaks.
I then emptied that water out. And pumped pond water in the tank. 3 years now no problems.

Sorry to hear of the illnesses. To family.

Cheers for the words Tom Koi and Fred, it is what it is as they say ... nothing to be done about it bar keep getting on.., Koi I find are the best thing for sanity, 15 minutes with a brew by the pond is probably the best therapy for the soul that there is. Until you have to start chasing ducks or see one or two start flashing ..... but that just comes with the territory I suppose, well worth the effort.

Cheers Fred what I meant about open plan, was that filter house is built off pond wall with that wall left open so, when I seal pond off for winter etc, I can still access pond from fliter house, so I'am afraid of fumes affecting/getting into the pond, if that makes sense
