Thanks Anne, I thought you'd spot it as I think you spotted it first last year too.

Anything over 0.5 million ohms is usually OK but as your tester is only using a very low voltage to read the resistance it may not be capable of getting the same reading an insulation resistant tester gets as that works by producing 250 to 1000 volts to carry out the test so if cables are breaking down the tester can pick that up as 250 volts will jump a bigger gap and give a more accurate reading. So it's quite possible that your element is faulty and shorting down to the case? What was the resistance of the element itself John?

    Hope you understand all that
Morning Frim and hope you had a great day yesterday.

Ok to check the resistance I set the meter to yellow 20m and touched each element terminal is that correct Frim?
    Reading 01.0.

Thought maybe when I put the earth on that the neutral was possibly shorting to earth, should I keep the earth disconnected?
Wouldn't want a load of electric going through the water though

Sorry for being a pain Frim.

Evening John, no you need to set the meter to the yellow 200 as the 20 M is 20 million ohms no wonder you are getting an odd reading LOL

The 200 scale is 200 ohms as you are looking for a reading of around 60 ohms.

All you need to do is hold one of the leads from the tester onto the brown or red cable of the heater and the other lead from the tester onto the blue or black cable of the heater. It doesn't really mater which of the tester leads go where as the resistance will be the same no mater how you test it I think you will find.

If the heater has a 2 core flex them remove the earth wire you added.

Sorry for the late reply I've been busy today - working before anyone (Johnathan) says anything about the QT

The 20 M and 200 M is for testing between the live and neutral of the flex and the casing of the heater as that should be a reading of 500 thousand ohms or 0.5 million ohms.

As I have to keep guessing if the heater has got old or new colour cables and the same goes for the tester if you could take a photo of the heater and tester leads it would help speed up my replies

Sorry that should be above those figures as they are the minimum you require to not be knocking out an RCD or MCB John
