    Sodium Thiosulphate

    Hi

For some time now we have been using Sodium Thiosulphate to help de-chlorinate our tap water when re-filling the pond.

We have made a mixture using the crystals at a rate of 130gms per litre of tap water. Then using at a rate of 10ml per 100 gallons.

Recently I read somewhere that the correct amount of crystals per litre of water is 260, twice what I have been using.

Can you clarify what is the correct recommended amount to be used for de-chlorination?

The only measurements I have heard is either 130gms for 1 litre, or 250gms for 2 litres.

    Brian,

The correct dose rate for sodium thiosulphate crystals is 13 grams per 1,000 (Imperial) gallons which will dechlorinate water up to a chlorine/chloramine level of 0.8 mg/L This is about twice the normal maximum chlorine level in UK tap water supplies so there is a safety margin in case extra chlorine is added to sterilise the pipes.

If you prefer a stock solution then, as Andy says, add 130 g of sodium thiosulphate to 1 litre of boiled (and still very hot) tap water. Use this at a rate of 10 ml per 100 gallons and you will using the same dose rate as 13 g of crystals to 1,000 (Imp) gallons.

Since sodium thiosulphate is commonly sold in packs of 250 grams them 250 g dissolved in 2 litres equals 12.5 grams in 1 litre which is virtually the same dose rate as 13 grams in 1 litre.

    Hi Manky,

I have been using your dose 10ml per 100gals for a while now, but it allways seems so very little for such a large amount of water.
I know it is correct after checking with the dpd4 tablet, but it still seems such a small amount.

That's the beauty of ST crystals, cheaper than chips.
I think my current 1kg tub will out live me.

    John,

That sodium thiosulphate is potent stuff when it comes to "search and destroy" missions for chlorine

But when you work out the molecular chemistry, (which some of us who should get out more seem to enjoy ), 130 grams in one litre is 130,000 mg/L. 10 mL of that solution contains 1,300 mg of sodium thiosulphate and 100 gallons is 455 litres so we have 1,300 mg mixed into 455 litres which is a sodium thiosulphate concentration of 2.86 mg/L. The chlorine concentration of tap water is only 0.4 mg/L maximum so there is seven times as much sodium thiosulphate as chlorine.

Or to put that in simpler terms, the chlorine is well outnumbered

    PWNN,

You could always leave the remainder of the tub in your will!

    Manky,

To be honest i put a bit more in cant help myself,im a bit frighened of a repeat of my last chlorine problem.
Would i be doing much harm? Once the st has done its job does it disappear or hang around a while?

Must agree pwnn love it being cheap as chips

As with most things I don't know but sodium thiosulphate is Na2S2O3.5H2O, does that help?

I hpoe it is the same because i bought some.
I read somewhere that Pentahydrate means crystals,so sodium thio pentahydrate means st crystals.
Probably talking a load of crap as usual.

Just looked it up, Pentahydrate is copper sulphate CuH10O9s and is used as an algaecide, don't think I'd be adding it to my pond.
Syd will give you the correct information.

Pentahydrate just means five water molecules indicated by the .5H2O
Many different chemicals will have pentahydrate as a suffix.
I'm pretty sure most sodium thiosulphate is pentahydrate (but haven't checked)

I get the 5H2O, but have no idea why I found CuH10O9s!

Just read this and can see now why I'm confused, missed the bit about putting ST before Pentahydrate.......this is why I'm a builder and not a chemist. Lol
