Do Koi "Aclimatise" to our weather ?

Ive had more or less the same group of koi now for 3 years in my unheated pond .

Ive noticed , this year , that they seem a lot more active than they were at the same time last year - even though temps have been similar (probably colder ,this year if anything).

Could it be that after a period of time , koi begin to adapt to their sorroundings and become a little more accustomed to dealing with colder temperatures .

This is purely my own observations - just wondering if anyone else has noticed this , or if theres any science to confirm or deny this theory?

To be honest mine are very active to for the temps we are having this year as I'm sure they are much lower than last yr so there may be some truth in it hippo

i don't know if they can acclimatize as such, but i think they do get accustomed to their surroundings and feel more confident and comfortable with time, anything that will stress them, such as having to catch them or treat the pond with a chemical, cats, noise, water parameters and temperature, etc etc, i think can make them cautious or nervous for a period.
Maybe if your fish are happier this winter they are more relaxed because a problem you had previously ( that you might not even have been aware of , a heron for instance )is not a problem anymore.

Mine also seem more active - Could your water quality or aeration be a little better this year? This is what I have put it down to in my case. More of my fish are new in the pond this year than last, so better acclimatization seems unlikely.

Is it possible that your koi have grown since last year but proportionally the amount your feeding them hasn't and the koi are just actively looking for food?

I think there is some truth in that koi can acclimatise to their surroundings; but in particular I think that, with the assistance of winter covers, (which we've had for 2 years now) they are helped to acclimatise by being protected from sudden fluctuations in temperatures - or the full impact of the winter weather. I would concur that the appetite of our koi has been unusually good this winter; however that is with 8 koi completely new to us - so there isn't really any comparison I can make with last year..
It's an interesting topic - well done for raising it.

I stopped feeding in December , once the pond got down to about 6 degrees .

The only difference I can think of is that Ive dis-connected the waterfall , which was my only inlet into the pond . Its now acting like a mid water return , so maybe the flow around the pond is a bit stronger ???

I don't think they acclimatise year on year..

What they don't like is big changes in temp - particularly downwards.. and this year after a hefty drop in late November early Dec temps have if anything risen ... Until the last few days...

Think mine are just fed up of seeing the covers on rather than the sky but they're still searching for food:-)
