Good stuff everyone.
I'm about to start a Holding/QT pond and wondered if there is a minimum temperature?
I plan to complete the pond in 4 to 6 weeks so it will be Christmasish...Would i be better off using a cheap pvc liner till it warms up?
There will be fish in there as soon as its safe to put them there as all or some from the main pond will be in there while i re-do that.
Big Talk but just been made redundant so i thought i'd use the time and cash before i blow it all.
Amsterdam is calling. Must resist and get cracking.

I try to avoid doing any fiberwork when the temperature drops below 10 degrees, unless you have some way of heating the work area (indoor workshop).
the curing process simply stops if the temperature drops, but it will start again if you raise the temperature.
but you have to be aware that making a tank is quite abit of work, and it does take some time to get it finished due to the curing times, so if it's something you need in a couple of days you will be hard pressed, but if you have the time a fiberglass tank is better

Thanks mate. It's going to be a small block built pond as opposed to a tank. Might be wise just to use the liner then till temps are regularly better. I haven't seen the temps today but it was a bit nippy here in West Midlands

Sorry for the delay, was working against the clock on the indoor tank, with winter comming in fast here
Some exsamples of fiberglass issues, there is 3 to each slide. First picture is wet the next 2 are cured from top and bottom sides
First layer not 100% soaked

can you use rendering mesh to assist with the render layer before glassing? I do not see how a few mm of insulation will do any more for me than take a little less time to apply, there should be more than enough latent heat in the ground 1m+ down to keep the temperature higher than 6 degrees and in summer will allow the water to not get excessively hot either

i didnt use any kind of insulation in mine. mainly because i belive that koi should have a natural summer/winter cycle, so i will just cover the pond to make sure it doesnt freeze over.
but yes generaly 1m below ground lever you should have 8 degrees all year round, so it will help heat up the pond in winter and cool the pond in summer

Hi Frich
I have read through your guide several times and can't work out whether each length of glass should overlap each other or is it butted up to each other on the first layer like hanging wallpaper, and then overlap the joints on the second layer?Cheers

'for the best strength you need to put minimum 2 layers on top of each other while they are wet, with an overlap between sheets, minimum overlap should be around 5cm and try not to overlap in a corner.'
Take from first post.

as andy mentioned you need an overlap at each sheet of around 5-10cm
i only used 1 llayer of 450 grams on my pond, it's not important with extra layers if your backing is good. (in my case hollow blocks with reinforced concrete)
if you where to make a tank able to hold 30-40m3 of water at a height of 1,8m you would need alot more then 2 layers

Is there a reason not to overlap the cones ?

A corner will allway be a stress point, so keep ovelaps 10-20cm away from the corner where possible.

Thanks got it now .You bend the sheets in to the corner

Yep
Also remember if you cant put up the next sheet while its wet, you need to wait till it's cured and sand down the overlapped area.

fiberglassing
i only used 1 llayer of 450 grams on my pond, it's not important with extra layers if your backing is good. (in my case hollow blocks with reinforced concrete) sorry but i started a new thread to night before i saw this one .my small tank is 10x3x3 concrete blocks and cement rendered and was painted 10 years ago and as had a liner in for the last 5 years i wont to glass it to do away with the liner .as its a strong built tank can i get away with one layer sorry i meant to quote frich

just meassure out the total area you need to cover, and then find a shop that sells it close to you.
if you know the area they will know how much you need.
but normaly you need 10% more glass to be able to make the overlaps, and a 450gram takes around 1,5kg resin per square meter (300gram is around 1kg)
if you go with roughly 1kg per square meter of top coat you should have enough for all plus abit to make repairs with.
but as mentioned earlyer in the post make sure you have proper chemical disposable gloves (not the cheap ones from B&Q) and make sure you have a proper filter mask (activated carbon)
mask has to be able to withstand styrene vapors and the gloves should be class J i belive it is (N-heptane).

Hi all
Being a ex fibreglasser, (mainly water slides and water features for leisure centres) there is a product for bonding to pvc pipe, can't remember the name but will speak to my old boss. Just paint it on and wait for it to turn white, it etches the plastic for a really good bond, hope this helps
