more selections my end... went through the green vortex tank again that's holding my smaller keepers from the early summer spawning.

and finally, I got round to selecting through the later summer spawning - and I have several pics of the keepers in their cage net before being released back into the pond to grow on. as a heads up though - there are a lot of pictures of small kohaku... be warned. it's addictive looking for the good ones..

Ive taken 9 of my kohaku babies to the All England Show this weekend! Vat 27 if you're there,,,,

Did a measure up before the trip, and it's good news. They're all around the 20cm mark, with the largest few at 21cm and the smallest 18cm. Not bad considering they were spawned in May this year!

Wow they certainly have grown fast:/)

thanks Nik. Went through the other 100 or so in my keepers tank this morning and finally pulled out the largest one, which is a whopping 23cm! And it has a pattern. It's like a beast compared to the others. I'll sort out a picture.

What you feeding them on and at what temp?

    Hi,

Good question and topical - I exhibited the babies at the All England Show last weekend and several people were asking similar questions, and were surprised how big my 2014 babies are.

I'll write a proper response when I have more time, but in short:

    - 1st month = natural food in the fry pond
    - 2nd month = ZM Systems fry food
    - 3rd month onwards = Coppens aquaculture crumble.

    Temps wise:

1st month in the fry pond; I didnt measure the temps.
2nd month onwards: in a recirculation pond in the polytunnel. Temps between 21 and 27. Used heater to stop temps dropping below 21 on cold weeks.

So it's the coppens that's bulking them up then:-)

  8. #68
I sing to them aswell. forgot to mention that.

I thought coppens might draw a comment. bottom line is, that's what I use. It's not a coppens product that is typically stocked in a shop, and I buy from a wholseller.

    the product is:

carpco crumble - aquaculture nursury feed. It's 56% protein.

the even higher quality food in the early stages of the fry's life is important - and this year I went with the ZM Systems food - and that's around 60% protein and filled with other good stuff. next year, I'll feed that for a little longer and I may revert to coppens equivalent version (which I used in 2013), called "Carpco Crumble Excellent". It's very expensive. I found out about all these feeds from Mark Davis; and there are some helpful articles on the CKF website on this kind of stuff.

all england show was fantastic. best show I've attended for a long time. the quality of fish was as high as it's been over the last few year, in my opinion. and that hasnt helped me! my cuttlebrook shiro male took 2nd in size 4 utsurimono - a decent achievement. but my kohaku babies drew a blank. my size 1 tancho came second.... but once the benching matrix was published it was clear this prize was out of only two koi! so it wasnt a competitive prize. I will have to wait at least one more year to achieve my initial project objective. and to be honest, I think my best bet will come from one of my smaller, prettier kohaku's that will be a small nissai next year and will be that little bit more finished and fare better at the show.

Nevertheless - I received some fantastic comments about my kohaku babies. people generally impressed with their size and it was fantastic to talk to people at my vat, and hear them pick out which one they like over a different one and so on. that made my day - because I bred those kohaku and people liked them! I went home more happy from a show than I can remember in a long while.

If you can take more pictures of kohakus - I've just completed selection on the later summer kohaku spawning.

Interesting to compare the early and later summer kohaku spawnings - both spawnings used the same female but with different males.

    You gonna sell a few??

    Hi Nik,

Been away for a week, and missed your post. I've been selling some here and there constantly since the first selection on my early summer kohaku's and I moved on the final batch just over a week ago. I've been using ebay, which has worked well for me to move them on.

I'm down to around 100 from the early summer kohaku spawning, and around 200 from the later summer kohaku spawning. All are doing well, and I'm growing them on over the winter - currently at 24 degrees.

I'll have to move most of these on by June next year to clear the grow on tanks out to make room for the results of my 2015 breeding efforts. But by that time they will no longer be small koi! I must take some up to date pictures for the blog soon to provide an update.

I'm thinking ... a big ebay splurge in Mar / April time, and maybe keep 10 to nissai. My main focus now is just keeping them on the growth curve. The late summer kohaku's have taken some time to settle in, but they're rocketing away now.

    Happy new year!

Been a while since I updated you all, and in short - the koi have been growing well.

Quite a few koi from the May 14 kohaku spawning well over the 30cm barrier now, and here's one I pictured/video'd on new year's day.

    And a few others:

I pulled out some before and after examples back in November when the largest koi were around 25cm:

I'm catching up on a few koi tasks this week and should get a chance to have a closer look at the Jul 14 kohaku spawning in the next few days. It's been a while since I've had a close look at them, so it should be interesting. Growth wise - they're a long way behind the May 14 spawning - but then they're 2.5mths younger.

Hi. Been a busy few weeks on the koi front, what with selections on both may 14 and jul 14 kohaku spawnings, plus talks at Kangei and South Downs koi clubs.

There's a section on the talks I gave where I profiled individual koi case studies, and I've started writing some of them up onto my blog

Here are summaries of the Feb selections:

Selections on May 14 spawned kohaku's last weekend - Adam Byer - Koi Hobbyist

Selections on Jul 14 kohaku spawning - Adam Byer - Koi Hobbyist

and the first two case studies:

Case Study #1 - Adam Byer - Koi Hobbyist

Case Study #2 - Adam Byer - Koi Hobbyist

overall, some of the may 14 kohaku's have really shot up and the colour quality is promising. the jul 14 kohaku's tend to have prettier patterns - and growth has been ok; it's difficult to compare as they're 10 weeks younger and missed most of the summer growing season.

with the selections complete, and the air temps breaking above 5C during the day - I've uppped the heating to 24C and looking for another 2 months of growing on before I select which koi to take to nissai.

We slipped into March last weekend, and with the temps racheting up, the SE Club's Spring Show is just 2 weeks and the koi season is finally here. My females tank is up to 11 degrees, the fish are well and I've started preparations for the breeding season. We received our shipment of specialist fry food yesterday, and this weekend I need to start draining down the fry ponds and relining them. I've written up another case study (#3), and this time I've focussed on a tancho.

Case Study #3 - Adam Byer - Koi Hobbyist

and some thoughts about drifting into March and the step change in koi husbandry that comes with that
