unbelievable, the fry spotted from my spawning just 3 weeks ago are already at first selection size. that's 1 inch in 3 weeks - from the spawning date!
giving me confidence that I've got the hang of the fry pond cycling....
completed 3rd selection, and also selecting through some of the smaller fish that we missed at first selection. We've been giving the smaller ones that we missed a second chance in their own tank, and some have come good. check these out:
The smaller keepers are coming on nicely. - Adam Byer - Koi Hobbyist
and, btw - they're not so small now. around 6cm. and now they are being fed properly, growth is coming too. the largest ones from that spawning are 15cm. most of the main keepers are 10cm. that's 3 months after spawning...Co-founder and owner of Adam Byer Koi Farm (https://www.byerkoifarm.co.uk/collections/koi-for-sale)

it's a little nervy, considering all the effort to get this far. with 3rd selection now complete, I've got around 100 to 150 to grow on to 15cm-20cm and beyond. and that will give me a better idea of the qualitiy of them - particularly at the end of a winter of growing on.
ran short on time at the end of selection to take individual pictures, but got some group shots for the records and have carved out some individual koi from those pictures. first up, a few tancho:

Fantastic growth and going well Adam, are the Kohaku keepers now growing on in one of the tanks inside the tunnel?

Hi Dave,
Yes, they're in a 10k litre bestway tank. I still have some smaller koi growing on in a 1k litre vortex that I'm using as a makeshift tank. Both vessels connected to the same filtration system - Oase Drum followed by home made bio filter (mixture of K1 and Alphagrog).
Feels good to have whittled down the number of fish in that tank to c.100 - 150. It was around 10 times that just a few weeks ago!
Here's a sneaky peak of a few more of the 3rd selection keepers. Going to profile these over the week on my blog. The tancho's have already been on my blog, but the others are new..

Adam, in your blog you mention a number of your Koi that have gone onto ebay as they didnt make it past your selection
Do you have a link to your ebay page. People might feel a bit happier about buying off ebay if they knew they were yours!

Hi. Thanks for the thought. Yes, we're using ebay to move some on. We have two ads on there right now - not sure whether these koi would be of interest to people on this forum, and we're only offering them in pre selected batches rather than as a pick your own type of thing - as it's all we can facilitate, and we need to move these on as fast as possible to free up tank space. hence why I've only advertised on ebay, and at cheap rates. While they're in my tanks, they are being well looked after.
Here they are:
The 4 incher's are the best quality fish we've released. These guys made it through to 3rd selection being we decided to let them go. I've had a couple of people from my koi club take some of these, and it was a really proud moment for me to know these guys are using some of my koi for a winter grow on project. The pictures on ebay show all of them. Around 25% have gone now.

We also have a lot of 3 inchers, which are the ones from second selection that we decided to move on. they're not all 3 inches, some are a little smaller, and most are 3-4 inch and they range up to 5inches. People buying these are getting very cheap fish - with a mix of plain white or red ones in a batch. The pics on ebay show a representative sample.

so, you've seen the 3rd selection fish - but I have some more for you. i keep finding good ones coming through from the smaller keepers that I have in a separate tank - check these out; all around the 6 cm mark when I take them out of the tank:

things going well with the project right now. and having got through some tough months, it's a relief to be able to share some of the positive results I've been finding.
A few more updates - basically, finsihed selecting through the smaller keepers that we've been nurturing in their own tank. And, the kohaku fry from the final spawning are doing really well. just need to find time to harvest the pond.

Report on the Toby's I found in my first kohaku spawning:
Naturally large - Adam Byer - Koi Hobbyist
and, seine netted the fry pond today to harvest more kohaku fry - same female oyagoi as the one from my early summer spanwing, but different males. a chance to get two year's worth of experience with her, in just one year. and I have just enough fry from that second spawning too enable that. So, overall - a good day on the project.

harvest went well, and we pulled out a reasonable number of kohaku fry. certainly enough for me to assess quality in comparison to my earlier kohaku spawning. we're getting the hang of seine netting, and the seine net is holding up well following some repairs yesterday. here are the pics:

growth of the first batch of kohaku has been better than expected, and with lots to choose from above 15cm - I entered my first home bred koi into a koi show last weekend. whilst nothing has been won yet - it's a milestone reached just to have been able to enter some.

and, I had a little koi keeping issue last week - overdid a waeter change with dire consequences. so easy to make mistakes.

thanks Nik.
long way to go still...
went through the keepers, and shed a small number. took the opportunity to photograph them and measure a few. I'm expecting to grow all these on over the winter. I guess there will still be the odd one that I will select out along the way.

starting to feel like a winter grow on project - Adam Byer - Koi Hobbyist
I need to go through the vortex again, and also select through the kohaku's from the late summer spawning. there have been few enough of these so I've grown the whole batch on to second selection size.they're around 2 inches now, and I'm feeling the urge to thin them out so the better ones have a chance to grow more.Co-founder and owner of Adam Byer Koi Farm (https://www.byerkoifarm.co.uk/collections/koi-for-sale)

I aim to hold temps between 20 and 25 C in the growing on tanks.
I am underpowered on the heating front though, and I need to bite the bullet soon and beef it up a bit.Co-founder and owner of Adam Byer Koi Farm (https://www.byerkoifarm.co.uk/collections/koi-for-sale)
