koi in merseyside / North west
Hi there everyone,
I have a new 10,000 L pond to stock with koi this year, I currently have 5 that went in last year with 2 albino sterlet + 2 diamond sturgeon and a few small commets and tench.
so I am looking for the best place to get koi from in merseyside or the north west. I do not drive so I am restricted in were I can go, I have a friend willing to drive me but the closer to bootle the better. So just wondering if anyone here knows of anywere I can go and pick out my fish. I was looking forward to going to stapley water gardens but they have closed now so to my current knowledge I am left with maidenhead aquatics or wigan pier aquatics so I will be very grateful if anyone can point me in the direction of a good shop/dealer where I can get lots of varieties and number of fish to choose from.
also I will be looking for fish from 2" upwards as I am shopping with a budget.
thanks for any info that may be given.

Hi Kie,
You're a bit early to be buying koi unless you've a heated pool. I wouldn't entertain it until we're out of March.
Have you considered buying on-line?
You can get a good assortment to start you off of 5"-6" fish from around £12 each.
I'd recommend not buying fish any smaller than that unless you are intending to bring them in and over-winter them in a heated tank."The information's out there,
You only have to let it in." (Jesse Stone)

hey riley,
no I am deffinatley not even considering putting any fish in now, the pond is unheated, I am just putting in the time and research so when the weather has improved enough to get some then I know were I am going to get/look for them. make sure I get some decent healthy fish.
I have kept fish for many years mainly tropicals though, I have had a few small koi over the years in the pond I built in my nans 6 years ago but my grandad always over fed the pond so now I have my own at home I have full control.
I am glad that you mentioned the size of the fish, I have had fish from 4" i think in the past and had no problems but ill definatley bear that in mind as I dont have space to over winter them as my tanks are full of oscars and catfish or discus so dont really have any more space lol.
I have been looking online and considering doing that, I have had a few in the past but was kinda hoping to see them before I decide to buy. the problem I have is most sellers giving the best deals so far are selling in groups and most groups are either selling them as single variety groups or with varieties in that I dont like such as sanke, I guess ill just get in contact with some sellers and see if they can put a group together of the varieties I am after.
is there an online seller you would recommend, maybe someone you have used in the past?
thanks again

This is in Leeds but is a great place to go for koi all prices - Migoto-Koi with Dave who will give you a cup of tea and talk everything through with you, wealth of advice and some great fish at terrific prices. I do over a 300 mile round trip to go visit so that says what i think of the place and am also on a budget Dave has always matched - no pressure just great company and fish.

I would have said Holmeswood, only up the road from me...
Other than that, there are a couple more, in various places. Although some are more for a gardener rather than a serious hobbyist.
JKPW on the A59 Burscough.
Vincents, on A570 to Southport.
Bloomfields, Much Hoole.
Clairmont, outskirts of Leyland.
Auldene garden centre, Croston.
Maiden Head Aquatics, off the motorway M6 J27
Koi World, Kirkham.
Used to be a good one in Wigan, but that's gone.

i was in elm bank koi in widnes few weeks back getting some new babies, i asked about uknishikigoi and it turns out that they used to own that and used it as a koi farm but sold it on to the current owner, said that the current owner sells fish if you go into him but he isnt really bothered as keeping them is his hobby, might be worth a look anyway
