    Telling males from females

Hey mates I’m having a bit of a tough time trying to figure out the sex of 2 fish.

    I checked their vents

Stubble on face but the vent shape is female based on my readings.

Stubble on face but vent shape is female based on my readings.

Is it that the vents of both are the same but the overall shape is different?

This is a confirmed female vent

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

so hard to tell when small even dealers will post things like un-sexed on fish for sale. the rule use to be if it has a hole or a O on the anal part its male if it is a Y or T shape is it female. as well as body shape as females tend to have a bigger body shape .

I reckon the top fish is female, just by going on body shape, but I'm assuming that their are the same age?

Yes, both are around the same age. The smaller one is very hard to sex, it has a female body shape but at times the face seems rough just like a male.

Its a great question and I'd love to know the answer, I regularly watch youtube vids and I saw one, where a Japanese breeder was selecting very young Koi he was looking at their whatsits and putting them into separate bowls, so it seems like they can tell from a very early age, another video in by the Pond Digger or Pond Guru American video and he's at a dealer where the dealer is showing him how to sex them, they were older fish through, he's a big fella ginger hair and beard and tash.
If I come across it later, I'll post link up.

I always assume the rounder fatter fish are female, just from looking I am pretty confident my chagoi is female just by the shape of her and she's only 19cm. As for the Beni Kikokuryu I am not so sure

I bought a 1 year old chagoi . Sorry don't the the terms. And the shop swore it was female toke it back to be scraped 6 months later and they said its a male or a super model female so I just look at shape now as you say big round female

I think I have it down now. The mature females are usually rounder with no rough touch feel along the face and from a side view their vents are convex. mature males are less rounded and more streamlined in shape they are rough to the touch around the face and when you look at them from a side view their vent is concave.

I find it’s easier to sex Doitsu by the lateral line, pronounced lateral line Male and grooved it’s Female.

Apparently the leading ray on females pec fins tend to be thicker than males.

Whether that's actually true, im not sure.

That was a LOL moment for me Telling males from females. Brilliant. Clearly my Showa has been subject to the lip stick test at some point.
Shame about her Hikkui and rapidly disappearing sumi! I chose her last year as a Sansai based on a beautiful lightening stripe on her head and the perfect kuchibeni ... but she's rapidly turning into a Kohaku! Hey ho ... I'll take that any day over the bl**dy Hikkui that both she, and my Sanke, have now presented with Telling males from females

As for sexing koi, I've watched the Mystic Koi vids plenty of times and I'm still not able to get it right. Mind you, even the experts get it wrong; before I did my own scrapes, I had a pro come out and he was convinced my Kin Mat was female ... till it released a load of milt whilst sedated!!! For me, the easiest identification is the rough cheeks, second only to lobbing in the lipstick / handbags / high heels etc Telling males from females
