Ha ha it's a tough call to sex carp. From body shape, pec fins colourations and shape, vent shape, gills roughness etc
Vent shape and the gills in spawning are the best ways, should a female be egg bound causing dystocia then manual removal of the eggs can be a winner too (this should only be carried out by experienced and skilled personnel).

Not sure how scientific it is but the confirmed males in my pond all have hard boney mouths and feed veraciously, the females are the total opposite very soft mouths and feed very gently, the total opposite in fact to humans ..... This is my scientific way to sex koi, and it works 100%

The battle of the sexes reaches new lows when girls are accused of having the 'fast pie arm'
But getting back to the pond - I used to think that feeding habits were a clue. I believe I've got mostly females in my pond, (body shape, vent, cheeks) and they all hand feed from me happily. In fact can't put my hand or arm in without being suckered enmasse. Makes window cleaning a fun, group activity. I've even had my nose sucked when trying to get a good look at the bottom on a cloudy day which required my face to be just above the water. Hubs witnessed this and concluded I was way past what could be considered 'normal interaction' with my koi
The one fish I know for certain is male I think has hand fed twice. It was a triumphant moment, cos he just doesn't like to hand feed - whatever is on offer. He's a classic hard mouthed, lightening grabber.
Unfortunately my theory that this standoffish behaviour was a boy thing got blown out the water last year when my Kin Mat, who is an avid hand feeder, turned out to be male during an anaesthetised scrape when he produced a load of milt. Darn it!
So for me I'm back to rough cheeks and lipstick fetishism.

The milt is the only real way of being sure, unless you’re as confident as Mike Snaden with running water off the leading edge of the pec fins.
People have been very misled by vent shape.
One of my best hand feeders is Freddie, my big male Byer Kohaku. He has the biggest lips in the pond bless him (and was a bargain because of being male)2016 new 6000 gallon pond

I haven’t had him out to measure at all this year, but I know he’s somewhere between 70 and 80cm as he’s taller than my window.
Here is a picture of him from where I am sitting inside the house right now
Here he is the day I got him
I love this fish, he has an incredible personality as well as a unique pattern that appeals to me. He is a total pig also2016 new 6000 gallon pond

Beautiful koi there, I am planning on buying a couple of Byer Kohaku in spring, they look like phenomenal fish at a reasonable price you'd never get a Jap Kohaku for

Thanks
The Showa is from Cuttlebrook. The smaller Kohaku on today’s pic is also from Adam and Amanda, was a tosai I got last year with my mukashi from them.2016 new 6000 gallon pond
