Males are only rough on the gills during spawning, it is to help stimulate the females when rubbing down their side.

I keep telling my boys that girls nowadays much prefer some sweet talk and a bit of fancy fin work as opposed to stubble rash, but will they listen? Telling males from females

Ha ha it's a tough call to sex carp. From body shape, pec fins colourations and shape, vent shape, gills roughness etc

Vent shape and the gills in spawning are the best ways, should a female be egg bound causing dystocia then manual removal of the eggs can be a winner too (this should only be carried out by experienced and skilled personnel).
