What size pond/tank would I need for koi fry?

    Hi there,

I am curious about what size pond/tank I will need to home the resulting fry when breeding fish for the first time next spring/summer? I have a big pond, but it is full of Koi so would not be suitable for the fry because of the obvious risk of them being eaten!

I was was wondering if anybody could tell me exactly what water volume/capacity and size tank/pond would be ideal for this process whilst the fish are growing? How deep the vat should be would be good to know as well.

Bearing in mind this is of course going to be just the one set of parents breeding.

I would appreciate any and all help on this topic.

    Thanks,

    Syd

I am by no means an expert but i have raised orfe and goldfish from eggs. It might be different for koi.

What i did was fairly hit and miss and the fish probably survived despite my efforts rather than because of.

To start with, i put the eggs in a tiny aquarium. Probably about 30-40 litres. I changed water daily. This is a painstaking experience due to the size of the fry. I used an airstone but noticed that it was pushing the fry into the sides of the tank. To combat this, i raised the airstone toward the top of the tank and put some blanketweed into the tank to provide them sanctuary.

I used one of the old fashioned sponge filters to filter the water.

Once the fry were about 5mm i transfered them all to a bath in the garden. I wrapped a pair of tights around the water pump to avoid sucking them up. I also made sure that the return from the filter wasn't too strong a current. I put a lot of plants into the bath tub and also some airstones.

Feeding them in the bath. The picture gets better after 39 seconds

Once the fry were an inch or so long i put them all in a pre-formed pond. I would guess that it was about 1000-1500 litres.

I fed them Cyclops to start with. Then moved on to daphnia, then bloodworms.

In the winter i brought a lot of them indoors into various tanks and tubs. This shows a tank where i had 5 or 6 orfe, roughly 2 or 3 inches long, living with an oranda.

    Hope that helps.

Go to the Cuttlebrook website. There is info on there from people who know what they're doing.
