I decided I would post the new pond build and update with new pictures as it progresses throughout.
I decided to let someone else to do the digging to save my back. The first two to three feet of top soil is a sandy loam and easy enough until you get to the hard packed clay.... then the fun begins.
He says he has built other ponds before and put koi in them... but I believe he meant something like a stock pond for the cows and horses, and I'm right. So this will be his first concrete walled Koi pond and I outlined the dimensions and the height of the wall above and below grade and the general concept of what I wanted..... so here goes:

So far this is where the pond build is. The depth right now is at about 5.5 feet deep from the top of the wall. The clay is super hard and I had to rent a small excavator to get that deep. Then the rains came.... more to come eventually.

OH... Sam (he's the guy doing the work for me) told me that if anyone else wants one of these.... tell them that this will be the only one he does like this... ever!)

Hi,
Looking interesting.

I've not seen one done in this way so will be watching with interest.

How far do those rods go into the ground?

I also haven't seen it done this way also, so it looks like I'm on a learning curve here.
The rebar goes about 12 inches into the ground. That wall isn't going anywhere since it was done all in one pour.
We will have to keep the inside wet in order to sculpt the sides and bottom. Once that clay hardens It's like concrete.
before the liner goes in there will be 1/2" dense foam on the walls.

Love the pics, looks like you have a lot of land around your property, very nice.
Well done on all the work so far.
Gav.

Great to see different construction methods. Shutter out and pour, job done.

What the plan for the drains and filtration?

For the bottom drain I have the Rhino 2 with the air bladder. For the filter I'm partial to the Kockney Koi design of the KF 18,000V and since I don't see a way to get one around here I've decided to try and build one similar in design.... we'll see how that goes. I also have the large Savio 18" skimmer that I'll put a pump in that also along with two UV lamps.
