What shallow water plants please
So gunna make a small top pond for plants that will sit on top of back wall.
It'll only be shallow around 6 inch deep 8inch wide 8 ft.
Want some colour in the back wall and maybe help with nitrates a bit
Any help or ideas greatly appreciated people

Golden buttons mate, they are quite small, easy to grow, multiply fast and are in full flower from may to October and look good.
I don't know anything about pond plants so these might not be a popular option but I love them, and because their seeds blow everywhere they started popping up in the flower beds allowing me to save some from last year to plant again this year (they are annuals but seed really easy).
Water forget me nots are nice too.
And of course shallow water lilies.

Just one thing, when I bought all my plants I soaked them in PP solution for 4 hours before putting in the pond just to be on safe side.
If you want to remove golden buttons from your basket I could post you some cuttings off mine, just PM me your address. Might take a week or 2 as I want to let them establish a bit more before chopping them up.

I am just looking into the same thing now about which plants to go for. Im also using the top pond as a method of extra filtration, extra food, and a way to bring more wildlife into the garden.
I was looking on mankysanke's site and watercress and arum lilies were the two that stood out for me. But only the white arum lilies, apparently the other bred variants can be toxic - they do look particularly nice though! He also stated that the koi love watercress so when you trim them back simply throw it in the pond, its apparently great for the fish.
I will be watching this thread for more ideas, good luck!

Flag Iris, Marsh St Johns Wort, Dutch Rush, Creeping Jenny, Dwarf Bull Rush, Cordata are all doing ok planted at shallow depth in my top pond, I think any bog type plants should be ok. I've had blotched monkey flowers and water hawthorn do well in the past too.

Cheers mate nice little lot there to have a look at unsure as to plant in normal pots with gravel or do some anoxic but would only fit 8 in so not really anything to fill filter as they are ment to be ran but thinking along the lines some thing better than nothing

Honestly mate I've still not even got round to it . Had 2 lots of plants to do it but little legs keeps pinching them so now have a planted wildlife pond in the front garden and a planted goldfish pond in her fairy garden and still no plants for the main pond the ideal is still there to do it but just haven't as yet

No worries. I've a 3m round lily/nature pond out the front too.
The round pond has a shelf the whole way around that I made too deep so the baskets have to sit on bricks.
I dont want to repeat this mistake but making it 20cms just seems too shallow!!
Heres the lily pond a few weeks back before the lilys came up .

I'd like the new planted area to look more natural as it will be (hopefully) completely full of plants.
I'm afraid it might look regimented using loads of square baskets.
