Which Plants should I buy for anoxic section?

    Hello all.

To start off with, I know nothing about plants.

I'd like to fully plant my anoxic section which is 2.4m long, 60cm wide and 24" deep.
It contains 1 bottom layer of large anoxic baskets and a layer of small anoxic baskets on top, the tops of which are around 4" below water level.

I could root plants in either the top or bottom baskets as there's gaps between them.

30% of the anoxic section is shaded in summer, 70% in full sunlight.

It looks like this, except more baskets now and obviously full of water:

    MVIMG_20190914_165637.jpgIMG_20190914_165612.jpg

I've been browsing this website and would like to start off with some nice flowering plants like Lillies, but no idea what types and what other plants to go for:

    https://www.wetland-plants.co.uk/shop/

Any suggestions on which plants and which types of lilies would be really helpful, or any other recommended websites to buy from....

    Thanks.

I reckon plants the don t grow large roots.
They will destroy the anoxic inside the baskets iris for me is a no no. I have had to buy new baskets all the time for them.
I have Lilly's just one large root. But I think they would be ok.

    Thanks Fred.
Definitely want lilies. Is there any particular ones I should get that are on that website, suitable for shallow water?

I'll take your advice and give the iris a miss.

I want to fully cover the water surface to stop algae growing around the anoxic baskets.

What plants are there that don't grow big roots but make nice flowers?

Like I said, I have no idea about what to buy, so I just selected the plants I like the look of and bought them.

Everything other than the Lillies will be planted in small 14x14cm baskets around 5" below water surface, and the lillies will be planted around 18" below the service in bigger 28x28cm baskets.

    Cheers Fred.

Not sure which 2 lilies you mean that look the same, but one of them is a lucky dip for lilies where the tags have come off and they don't know the variety so the photo is just a random example.

Going to make up 4 more anoxic baskets this weekend if it's not too cold so I can plant them.

What dosage of pp would you suggest to clear any nasties off the plants when they arrive?

Are you planting the anoxic baskets them selves or using a separate basket just for the plant ?

Planting straight into the anoxic baskets.

When I've made 4 or 5 more baskets this weekend, I'll have 19 baskets in total but only have 10 koi (will be 15 when the babies go in) so there should be enough surplus just in case the plant roots ruin the basket or something.

Its going to be a challenge to make a winter cover for the anoxic section as some of those plants grow up to a metre out the water. My aim is to have the entire water surface covered in plants to stop algae and blanket weed growing around the baskets. At the moment I have an ugly black cover over the anoxic section and it looks exactly like the day I built it, spotlessly clean and clear.

Myself I did my top pond. As the packet instructions for killing parasites in a pp dip.
    Left it for 24 hours.
But my plants where already well established in the top pond. It says don t dip roots in it. Only leaves. I soaked the lot mate. But like I say. My plants are nearly 4 years old.

    Ah, I get ya.

Don't know why I gravitate towards plants with pink flowers, must be a feminine side lurking within me!

Hi Rs, not an expert by any means but I have had lillies etc in my old pond.
Those prices are very good may get some myself.
With the small volume of water I would recommend a small lilly like the Hermine but saying that the unnamed ones are a bargain.
When planted dont drop to the bottom wait till leaves grow and slowly lower it down over time, believe it or not I was told a Lilly can drown
    Yes sounds daft.
I have those horse tails and dont rate much.
Get some water cress from the supermarket and throw it in a bucket of water in a few days they will sprout and put that in good for nitrates so they reckon.

    Thanks John.

During this period of self isolation we started building a small wildlife pond today for the wife, so any plants I've bought that I don't like can go in there
