my Lilly baskets stink!
just fished out a basket that had a established but ugly lilly in it and threw it away. But wow did it stink. the basket had collected so much muck. it cant of been doing my pond chemistry much good. Probably didnt help that the gravel top to the basket was all missing from koi rooting around causing spaces for detritus to settle.
im glad i've got rid of it now. i will fish the other one out tomorrow after work and clean it out and re pot.

I had the same problem with the fish rooting the gravel out and making a mess all over the floor .
I bought some garden mesh (the green plastic stuff with 20mm square holes) ,then ty-wrapped a piece over the top of the pot . It works pretty well , keeps the fish out , and the pads can easily grow through the mesh !Colin

Unless you've a big "natural pond" koi and lilies don't mix. They'll eat them down to the roots, stirring up all the gravel and muck by "blowing on it."
Actually that foul stink from the pot is what lilies love!
We solved the lily problem. Big pool for koi, small pool for frogs and lilies."The information's out there,

Wondering if it was operating as a biocenosis basket, as in Anoxic filtration????

The smell tells you that the bacteria in the basket were producing Hydrogen Sulphide, something that Anoxic filters do not and something you don't want in your koi pond.
If you re-pot the other Lilly using just large pebbles to hold it in the basket there is no soil or gravel for the koi to suck out but the Lilly will grow fine.

it doesn't matter, i learn't the same as most others. koi and plants don't mix well. I am going to throw them in the bin. My next pond will not be ornamental anyway

Check out a fellow club members pond, https://www.facebook.com/NottinghamK.../photos_stream , proof that koi and plants can live in harmony?

Every Lilly flower which has come up this year has been snapped off premature and the baskets are just a pointless risk for the fish to scrape themselves on. 50% of the pads have bite marks out of them by the time they get to the surface and then after a while they go yellow and need pruning. They are serving me no enjoyment whatsoever in there snapped messy states so they are going to be going.
it was nice having them for a while but im moving on

I also had two lilies but they also stank like yours. The koi didn't eat them but they did stop loads of debris moving around the pond so the skimmer didnt work properly.
