to RS2000....just seen your post and it was springbank koi that started Hubby off with everything, they were excellent,, but it was when they were actually in Bolton, not very far from us and we got our first fish from them,, then it changed hands and moved over manchester way, still not all that far and i was going to get in touch with them the other day, but unfortunately they only open about 3/4 days a week, and it was on one of the days when they were closed that i was going to get in touch with them, and because they were shut we went instead to cascade at bury, but i think its wed when they open again and i will have a trip down there and see if they do come out to ponds,,,

Assuming the biological part of your filter is no longer viable (working) (due to chlorine and or the pp treatment) you will for sure have an ammonia reading which is higher than 0.25.
You'll find a garden centre open locally today so pick up as said above the thiosulphate crystals of if you can't get hold of them from there get some tetrafin aquasafe or an alternative suitable dechlorinator along with a dropper bottle test kit capable of testing ammonia, nitrates, and nitrites.
Pick up enough of each to last you a few months based on daily testing and daily water changes.

    Test your ammonia levels.
If the reading is 0.50 or above id carry out an urgent 50% water change.
Below 0.50% but higher than 0.25 id change between 10-20%.
Once its stable @ 0.25 ammonia then 10% daily then every other day, three days, weekly, etc.....

Calculate and put dechlorinator in for the ponds total volume not just the ammount youre changing.
Give it 10 minutes os so to mix in the pond and then trickle the water in reasonably slowly in the area where the water flows back into the pond from the filters.

As your filters will not be working to remove ammonia biologically you will have to do the work for them manually by frequent water changes as outlined above.
How frequently and how much will depend on your ammonia levels from testing remembering 0.25 is the lowest the fish are likely to be tolerant of.

You should start seeing pretty instant results in how your fish behave to the water changes you'll do and watching/observing the fish behaviour for a few minutes a few times a day will give you an indication as to if they feel "comfortable" or not.
Any signs they're not comfortable then theres something wrong.
Water test then take action accordingly.

Over time your filter will start to mature and as it does so you'll find your water changes can become less frequent.

Have a look for the api freshwater master test kit much cheaper than buying separate kits. Also worth getting a KH kit because if like my tap water that barely has any KH you don’t want it going to low because this is what prevents your ph from crashing. Might be worth getting some pond bombs to chuck in your filter to help build up the friendly bacteria

Hi Viv, sorry didn't get back to you last night, some sound advice above and as said if you could get some dechlorinater today would be great and as said do a large water change then add when topping up.

I would send off for the s/t on the link I gave as it is a lot cheaper and cant be overdosed unless you tip the lot in.

Hi John . . thanks for that.. i just need to know how much to put in to the pond as im terrible at working anything like that out as a guide do you know how many grams i would need for a pond with 1164 gallons in? we have decided to try to get someone out from somewhere to check the pond over,, as we think in the circumstances that would be the best thing to do,, If spring bank koi do this i will try to get them, failing that i will just have to look round and find someone in our area, but i do thank everyone on here that has helped us a big thanks for that

I’ve told you how much of the diy mix to use but the bought stuff will be different depending on the maker so just read whatever it says in the back of the bottle it will tell you on there

Hi John . Still got my "funny" fish which likes having a lie down!! and i noticed another fish flicking, so i decided i HAD to sort something out,,, i rang the guy about pond maintenance and he was very nice but said he is fully booked with long standing customers but he doesnt mind me ringing him for advice,, which was very nice of him but not really what i'm after as you know, so i then got in touch with Spring Bank Koi who we have dealt with a number of times, (indeed these were the people years ago that gave all the info and help on starting the pond) anyway,, we had to go and buy some new aqua for his (i think they call them settling tanks) and we went yesterday,, had a word with them to see if they did pond maintenance and the guy said he used to but unfortunately he's not at the moment because his wife has just had a new baby and of course he's needed at home,, but come spring he will be doing the ponds again,,, so i thanked him and went home,, then we remembered that about 10 years ago the other half went on a car boot sale and for some reason (best known to his self) bought a microscope,, and it was still in the container in the shed,, so he dragged it out , its an old old russian microscope with a mirror at the base of it and the its in a metal container,(possibly an army thing) and i said right lets do a scrape on the little fish that had started flicking quite a lot, we went and watched and sure enough it did a few flicks and we got it in the net and i managed to carefully do a scrape went inside and stuck it under the scope and watched after a lot of faffing about something moved,, so i watched and sure enough it was really moving like a spring and stretching,, I looked it up although i was sure it was a fluke! which being honest from the word dot, i had suspected flukes even though we had taken the first fish to cascade for a scrape and they found nothing,, so although i wasnt pleased the fish had got a fluke i was pleased that i had found it! so much so that i have ordered a new microscope with 2 eye pieces instead of one ,, and i have been back in touch with a guy that we know who is going to come and put fluke solve in the pond,, maybe now we will get somewhere positive, i really hope so,, my son thinks i'm mad buying a microscope, lol but it was a good price on amazon so im not bothered ,i found it interesting actually , well thats the follow up so far i just thought i would let you know,, thanks . Viv
