    Welcome Ann.

If everything works ok and you're happy with it leave it as it is, it looks like a nice pond.

These are the common mistakes people who inherit ponds make, which are....

    • Don't rush out and buy more fish - live with your pond as it is for now and see how it copes with the seasons etc and how the fish cope.
    • Don't decide you want to give it a huge clean out all in one go, especially all the filters at once as you risk killing the fish with the sudden change or upsetting the eco-system that takes Months to build up
    • Never top it up with tap water, always add a dechlorinator first.

Koi need lots of regular water changes so its always a good idea to use the pond water for watering the garden (it's full of plant food too), then top up the pond with fresh dechlorinated water.

The filtration system you have looks a bit dated and is labour intensive to clean (always clean it in pond water, never tap water as beneficial bacteria that break down ammonia live in the filter), nonetheless the pond looks quite clear and well maintained. If in the future you want to add more fish it would be sensible to upgrade the filter system first, but if your happy with the number of fish you already have and don't want to spend money then it should continue to cope.

Live with it for a while and if you get the Koi bug and want to upgrade then you'll get plenty of good help and advice on here.

Thanks so much for this information, I was wondering about the filtration system as it does look quite bulky looking compared to others I have seen I may consider changing it at a later date if I succeed in taking care of pond and fish
