    my first koi fry

    hi
i live on iow , have set up two 1000l ibc tanks with two fx5 filters and two 500w inline heaters , i picked up around 300 12mm - 25mm mixed fry from new forest koi two weeks ago , seperated large from small , feeding koi fry food supplied from n/f koi and spirulina powder , frozen blood worm and mysis , feeding four or five times a day as temps are about 26.5 c , some of the fry have nearly trebbled in size and doing really well , i keep bonsai trees so i take out about 75l a day from each tank to water my trees , and top up once a week via three stage cannister filters , filters are being flushed weekly , all water tests showing up good yippee , i have lost around 20 fish over two weeks , any that show weakness , bent crooked spines i take out , and most days in the morning i find 1 small thin fry floating , i am not to worried about the odd one floating , i spend on average 30 mins each feeding , adding slowly and watching for when the bigger ones make room for the littler ones etc , this is my first atempt at fry rearing so any input will be greatly appreciated , when my mate pops over i will take some pics to post , thank you in advance guys

as said , this is my first atempt at rearing koi fry so any any any help would be greatly appreciated

    Hello and welcome Dustykoi,
I am doing the same with 258 from the same batch as you.
Cant give you much advice as I am not experienced with them this small but you seem to be doing ok.
I too have been losing a few for some
reason or another but I think that's normal.
I think plenty of water changes is good and it is hard to judge how much to feed whether they are getting enough or too much.

Would be good to see some pics of your set up,Dave j is the man who knows about fry.

Lovely place Iow went there once.
    John

hello john , i started storing water for my trees couple of years ago , then added pumps and goldfish to keep the mozy population down , then the idea of ibc tanks came up and then the koi fry , it certainly wasnt planned but hmmm between you and me it very adictive and extremely enjoyable , its really good to talk to someone doing the same thing ,
trying to make sure they are all fed is hard , i add a 1/4 teaspoon of spirulina powder once a day , i dont know whether that helps or ? the size variations between the fish is incredible , some of the fish are nearly 2 " yet some from same batch are not even an inch yet , i will post some pics later , good luck with yours john and ty for getting in touch , we must compare our results

just watched it again , yes very informative , its amazing how quick they grow , i watched loads of different videos , i am keeping my temps around 26c which i hope is not to warm and i also have 2 14" common plecs one in each tank , they seam to be doing a great clean up in the tanks and are not any problem at the minute , i have not heard any horror stories as yet of keeping plecs in the tanks but if you or anyone know of any please please tell , and ty guys , will post some pics later

Just keep doing what you are doing, observing and responding to the fish in front of you is a big part of it.

26C is a nice temperature for them, no issues at all from this.

Interesting about the plecs, I thought of leaving one in in each fry tank to act as hoovers - but decided against it as advice from guys that know a lot more about plecs than I , was they will take small fish - so I moved them out .. I may revisit this now that the fry are bigger as it would be nice to have someone do the cleaning in the tank!

Are you adding spirulina in powder form?

my thoughts exactly concerning plecs , i think the plecs are getting loads of hi protein food from the fry , the only time they disturb the fry is if they pop up the top for a gulp , i not saying you dont get the odd rouge plec that has a thirst for blood , but fingers crossed they keep enjoying the hi protein poo and left over food , yes the spirulina is a powder , makes the tank a bit messy , but a healthy messy if you get my drift , ty again

forgot to say i keep 3 bags of coral sand in each tank , hopefully keeping ph up a little as when the water goes through the 3 stage filter it drops to 7 or just below and gives the fry something to nibble
a suspended bag of activated carbon , changed every 3 weeks
six moss balls for the little guys to nibble at
and led lighting as the lids are closed overnight and when i not at home

all my water checks are fairly good as the filters have been going about 8 weeks prior to the fish going in two weeks ago , i have read many posts about nitrate and nitrite levels , they seem to be hovering around the 25 for nitrates and between 1 and 5 on the nitrites , ive read that activated carbon filters can be used to help keep the levels more stable , i have also read that this is nonsense , i have a couple of internal filters i can put some carbon in and was wondering what your thoughts are on this or as i am doing minimum 80% water change weekly on both tanks i should not worry , fish are doing fine with the levels stated

Hi Dusty, sorry for late getting back been really busy.
Yours look bigger than mine so you must be doing right,I have a problem with a few flashing a bit,you can see my thread in the health section, put a little salt in to calm them down and I believe it helps with nitrite.

I had 258 to start with but a few have died and some deformed but to be expected.
Keep in touch with your progress.

no worries will do mate , i am not certain but what i read before getting into this was higher temps and large water changes helps them grow quicker , when my daughter comes round i will get some better picks, i only losing the tiny ones every now and then , but have started taking out the ones that look like commons but cant bring myself to kill them so putting them in with the goldfish until my mate picks them up for his fishing lake , i not having problems with flashing , and i dont think the nitrates are to high but again i not a don , what size are yours now

i think if i did not have the two tanks to keep seperating the sizes i would have a couple of heads pop up lol , maybe they were just a couple that died and then got nibbled at through the night
