    hi john
after reading lots and lots on the forum , i am thinking of linking the tanks together and getting an easy pod pulling from both tanks , and sprinkle bar across both , the fx5 have the lph flow rate but are unable to hold sufficient media , i am happy how they working presently , but the little beauties growing rapid , put a couple of slices of orange and some curly lettice leaves , was brilliant watching them all over the food ,
how are you filtering your tank ,
    dusty

    Hi Dusty,
Sounds a plan to link the two together someone on here did that but cant think who, could use a 4ins pipe or 6ins.
One of mine had a fluke so put some fluke m in yesterday as they were flashing didn't bother them at all.
Still a few been dying seems to be the Kohaku and ogon ones for some reason, ammonia still up a bit and doing water changes.
My filter is 4ins bottom drain to a vortex which is a blue barrel then 10000 pump to seive on shower and four returns so a good flow.
Had a few going in the drain but sorted it now with fine mesh.

    What are you feeding now?
Mine dont seem to be growing that much but my temp is only at 20.5 as I am doing a lot of water changes,i should whack it up a bit.
I have a 1kw heater in 350 gals so should heat quickly and it is covered.

    Keep in touch.
    John

hmmm thats the one thing i not looking forward to is finding bugs on them but thats will be dealt with when it happens , i feeding them the second 1mm ish food , picking some larger food for them next weekend , i als putting an orange slice in now and then and some curly lettuce and spirulina now and then , its great watching them going mad on the top lol , i cant advize on why you still getting the odd death , i definately not experienced enough yet , but hopefully its just something to be expected , i have a 2 foot hold net i am putting in on sunday to seperate the tiny ones so i can feed them seperately , is it mainly the very small ones you are seeing dead ?

The hold net is a good idea will have to look into that.

I havnt tried the orange yet but will do.
It's not the smallest ones dieing but the orange Kohaku and ogon light ones and not the blacks, strange.

Do you have a link where you got the spirulina from?

Gave the ones in the main pond some mussels and kept one for the little ones, wrapped a piece of garden fine wire round it and dangled it just below the surface, they were a bit frightened of it but they wanted it and soon had about 50 eating like mad.

so had a bit of a shock today hmmmm
as said , i bought 250 koi fry from nfk about 3 or 4 weeks ago , lost about a dozen with floaters , few crooked backs and 2 today with deformed gills
the mission today was put tiny ones in float net , and sort the biggies for the pond and then seperate the rest between tanks , so this was my findings
    271 2.5" to 3.5"
    356 3/4" t0 2"
    139 8mm to 15mm
well to say i was shocked would be an understatement , if i had housed them altogether i would probably be none the wiser , as the tadpoles would have been eaten by now , when we sorted in the beginning we estimated 300 how wrong we were , we new that at least half of them were only possibly two weeks old , all were meant to be 6 to 8 weeks , i not complaining as due to seperating them most have survived ,
so all the large have gone to friends pond , he built this pond to take on the fry when they matured (bar the 16 i will be growing on )
my fx5 filters have coped well , i am getting a nexus fitted within ten days , will post some pics later , they not the best pics , but the colours are coming out beautiful

no i dont know what the grey ones are yet lol , i just cant believe how many there is in there , hopefully you agree that they are thriving though , i think the size is just down to the extra heat i am giving them (26.5c), when you purchased them did you go to pick them up or did you have them posted , spoke to my other mate a minute ago and he told me when he purchased his he had about double and most were tadpoles , please diont think i having a dig at nfk as i most certainly am not

    Hi Dusty
I did this for the first time last autumn with New Forrest Koi, and like you even down to the IBC method.
In fact for me it was the first time for any koi really. I did buy a couple of koi for a goldfish pond from a garden centre 20 years ago, so that doesn't count as koi keeping. lol.
And yes NFK are very generous with their quantities. I only ordered 100 but got 131.
Yes I had a few losses, I just put this pic on John1s thread to show how I had flashing for the first month. Fish file.jpg
I had them on heat through the winter to keep them eating and they were in the IBC until a the water temperature in the pond came up to the IBC temperature. I should really have selected the best then, but I wanted to see if the sun made a difference in colour, so opted to put all 101 that survived the IBC into the pond. the largest one is about 8-9" and the smallest I would say is 5" average is 6-7". They are 9 months old.
    Its great fun.
But it looks like you are studying it well so should do ok.
    All the best Steve.
